Should you get picked for a lottery duck hunt make sure you only bring 25 shot shells with you. The DNR guys basically strip searched every hunter before taking them out to the blinds this AM. I had 27 shells due to a couple of loose ones in my blind bag, and if not for catching a break they were going to pull me out of the hunt. 2 Hunters were well over 25 ea. and they got pulled out. Not sure if they got a ticket to boot, but after traveling all the way from Spartanburg to the South Santee, I’m sure they were less than thrilled with the outcome.
I don’t think he was criticizing the DNR in his post, he was just emphasizing that they are doing very detailed searches and being more strict that most realize. Just a little hyperbole.

Thanks for backing me up Redfish. I have been on numerous draw hunts, and never experienced the degree of scrutiny as this one. DNR is not at fault for anything, but their approach to this issue is far more stringent than in the past, so Word To The Wise post. Also, they just don’t take your shells, they pull you out of the hunt. I hunted by myself, and was put in a very nice location with a decent blind. Unfortunately the Northwest 20 mph wind was right in my face, and the ducks were pitching into the lee side of the pond a 100 yards away. Could have skybusted as they went over me, but I don’t take those kind of shots anymore. Shot the gun 4 times total. 1 time to kill a nice drake Redhead, and 3 times to try and scratch a couple more retrieves for the dog. I put one foot down on the bottom when I got to the blind and it never hit solid. That was all I needed to know about hunting away from the blind. The boat that I had was little more than a canoe, and I wouldn’t have been comfortable, or safe for that matter trying to shoot out of it. The pond was plenty big enough to handle multiple blinds, and it would have been nice to have options based on the wind, but for a $20 fee that complaint is a little much. That NW wind got cold, and I opted for the 9:00AM pick up. By the time I picked up the decoys…pick up one and by the time I wound the cord the wind pushed me back into the reeds, pole over to the next, get pushed back into the reeds, etc. etc. Then paddle, pole, push my way against the wind back to the dike and my 62 yr. old butt was whipped! I’m going to get the Redhead mounted and give it to my son. I’ve already got one that I killed in South Dakota many years ago. I enjoyed the adventure, struggled physically on my own, and I’ve got the picture of that Redhead getting stoned on my 1st shot filed away in the memory bank.
What’s the deadline for draw hunts? I forget about this every year and need to put it on my calendar.
Not trying to be a smart azz, but if you go on DNR’s website, you can get all this info and enter it into your electronic calendar. That’s what I do every year. I go on and pick out the ones I am interested in and set up reminders, then, closer to deadline, I am more able to figure out my schedule to see if I can attend or not…
A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.

I searched the other day on my phone and didn't see it.
Strip searched- little harsh don’t you think? After being told to have no more than 25 shells and you have more it is somehow their fault.
longbearded1, bossdog was hiding some extra shells in the anal cavity, so they had to give him a little extra searching. He claimed, that he was just trying to keep the powder warm, but DNR didn't buy it...
