Worm/parasite on redfish

Been catching a lot of reds with weird worm/parasite things on the fins and tail. Does anyone know anything about these? Would this be a concern if I consumed a fish that had them?

Common name - streamer worm or anchor worm. Like most parasites, they are blood suckers. They attach to the skin near the fins or between scales. Harmless to humans. If your going to release the fish , help it out by clipping all the streamers off

Clip them rather than pulling them?

either way they will die and stop sucking blood

Isn’t this more common when they are sitting on the bottom?

I don’t know - Ive caught mahi that were covered with them. The ticks of the ocean

Looks like that fish has had a rough life so far. Noticed the tail looks like a crab got hold of it probably back when the water temp was in the low 40’s. Reds in the mid Stono area have been scarce at best. Glad to see someone catching something
