i got tired of all the crap i got from a pair of maui jim’s my girlfriend got for me about a year ago (apparently looked too feminine) and the lenses were in pretty bad shape, so i spent $200 on a pair of costas yesterday afternoon spur the moment. almost right after that, i went by the house and got the kayak and put in by the pitt street pier. i hate to admit it, but i tipped over for the first time ever trying to get a hung up fly in the grass from a really, really sloppy back cast. but after a few minutes, i was back on the boat, no problems other than being a little wet. everything in my chest pack came out, but it all floated and i got it all back. i was being overly-cautious about the glasses i just bought and apparently there was a good reason for it. somewhere between exiting the kayak and loading up, my brand new blue case with the sunglasses (that i put in right before coming ashore) miraculously disappeared. so, if anyone’s wandering around the area and see a bright blue costa case floating around, they’re mine. i already went back to the pier and looked around, but i’m sure the tide snatched them up. and if the tide didn’t get it, i don’t know too many people that would be too concerned about finding the rightful owner to a new pair of sunglasses.
this is the only picture i have to remember them by:
r.i.p. my first pair of costa del mar’s: september 19, 2011 - september 19, 2011. you did me well.
i might have been okay with losing them, if i wouldn’t have had such an against-my-better-judgment dilemma before buying them. don’t have tons of money right now. maybe i’ll learn my lesson?
I’ve lost every pair of expensive glasses I have ever owned. Now I use strictly Edge Polarized “Safety Glassess”, which run about $30. They use a lense that is very similar to many high-end non-glass sunglasses (polycarbonate).
These I never lose, for some reason! At least you caught a fish!
i have a birthday coming up, so i’ll add this to my list and keep my fingers crossed. i definitely doubt i’ll spend $200 again anytime in the near future for sunglasses. i’ll look into that link. thanks
and as for catching the fish, he must have had a bad experience with getting caught in the past. i set the hook, then next thing i know, he’s made a straight run to the yak and just sat there.
I wish I had a Costa-Magnet… I hear about people losing Costas all the time… I had a guy come into the shop and buy 3 pairs at one time because he, his wife and son all lost thiers the same day… Just a side note tho… Costa makes a 580P lens (polycarbonate instead of glass), same quality as the 580 glass lens, the best they make right now, but instead of $250 they are around $170… I know it’s still alot of $$$$ but you can get a really good pair of glasses for a little less. They don;t coem wiht mirrored lenses ( purely cosmetic by the way) but they do coem in an amber color that is perfect for the inshore water color.
I think I’m done with expensive sunglasses for this reason, I lost my second pair of costas to the cooper river sunday. Same senario as the first pair, put them up on the brim of my hat, the wind blew up and took the hat and sunglasses. From now on, it’s cheap Sea Striker or Calcutta sunglasses for me.
Sorry about your glasses. I bought a pair of Peppers sunglasses. They are polarized, have a really good warranty for inexpensive shades and they float. They were around $30. They have a whole line of fishing glasses that float.

Where did you buy your Pepper’s sunglasses. They look pretty good online.
If people concentrated on the really important things in life, there’d be a shortage of fishing poles. ~Doug Larson
Half Moon Outfitters here in Cola. but there is one over in Mt. P. I am very happy with mine so far. I have some more expensive shades and like this every bit as much.
Every good pair I buy gets scratched or lost in weeks. The $20 pairs seem to last forever. Usually get several of same type when I find one I like. Even when I have the money I don’t see paying $200 for sunglasses. That buys a lot of bait.
The quality of a $60 pair of polarized sunglasses is a lot better than a $20 pair. The quality of a $200 pair of polarized sunglasses is just a little bit better than a $60 pair. Somewhere around the $60-$80 price point, the law of diminishing returns kicks in. (According to my optometrist.)
If you’re lucky enough to be fishing, you’re lucky enough.
