Would you spend...

$100 on the new SA Sharksin fly line. I’ve got to get a spare spool for my reel for a floating line and just wondered if anyone on here has an opinion . I’ve read a bit about it and talked to a couple of people up here but haven’t crossed paths with anyone who has used it in the salt. Also, what color, gray or green. If I get it, I’ll post a report from Florida, as if I will know whether or not the fly line was any better than the other brands. Thanks.

SC. Please tell me that is not your J3 Cub in the avatar? If so we are going to have to discuss tail wheel lessons.

And no, I wouldn’t spend that much on fly line. I can’t see how tiny raised bumps would make the line cast that much smoother. If there is a small difference I don’t think the extra forty dollars is justified.

TB, that’s me on my dad’s Cub back in '69. I found it last year in Texas via the FAA website and as soon as I can find the money I’m going to try and buy it back. We’ve still got the farm where it was based, althought the hanger and runway need some work. I was at the farm this weekend and while I was plowing some food plots off the end of the runway, I couldn’t help imagining what it would be like flying it back there after all these years.

Help me out with a fly line. I’ve got a clouser line on the spool I have but I need to get a floating line for my trip to FL. Which one do you have? Which one would you have if you’ve got the wrong one now?

SC. That is a classic picture! Neat that you found it in texas. I know what you mean about the money. It is absurd what those things are going for these days. You can’t get an airworthy one for under 40k which is insane considering they sold new for 4k. You ought to get that strip cleaned up and fly in there sometime. Nothing beats landing at your own place! As far as fly line is concerned I’m no expert but I really like the scientific anglers mastery series floating line. I’ve got WF-8-F, Horizon colored line and it has worked perfectly around here plus I’m sure would work even better in FL with the clear water. What I have ran me 62.00 at the angler in MP, so it is significantly cheaper than the shark skin. Your best bet is to just go talk to one of the guys there. Good luck!

Stick to the SA Mastery Series lines. I have been using them the past few years. And don’t bother with any of the more specific specialty lines, just get the regular saltwater line.

I had pretty much settled on the SA Mastery Saltwater Taper line in Horizon when the last issues of SWA and AA had the ads pasted all over the issues about this new line. That’s all good because my gift certificate to Cabela’s will cover the line plus a few extra things.

TB, Dad went to a regional fly-in in GA last fall and a guy there had a newly restored cub that he had turned down $65k for at Sun n Fun. Dad paid $1500 for his in '66. The runway is still clear and you could land there now but I would like to smooth over a few cow trails before I flew into it regularly. Here are a couple pics of the good times.

I just realized that the truck in the first pic was the truck I drove in High School. I sure wish he had held onto the cub like he held on to his vehicles! How do you like the “I gotta pee” pose :stuck_out_tongue:[:I] The second pic shows the addition onto the tool shed for the wings. The sides hadn’t been enclosed yet.

Gorgeous plane! Really nice distracted “where’s the head” look on the second picture . Have you seen the new Top Cubs. They’re going for 100k, granted it’s a brand new airplane but good Lord. No one ever said it was a cheap hobby, right? My dad had a Maule that he used to fly out of our strip and man do I wish he had kept that thing. Great STOL airplane just like the cub but a little faster. Are you in Charleston? If so we ought to fly one day. Capt. Gordon is right, there is no need for highly technical line around here especially because our water is so dark.

I’ve read where the manufacturers are adding close to 100% markup on the price to cover any future ltigation costs and that’s what is putting the prices out of reach, at least for me. I’ve never flown in a Maule but have seen quite a few. We almost had him talked into one of the new Piper Super Cubs but just couldn’t get him to buy one. I’m in Greer but try to make it down every chance I can. Would love to fly the rivers to get a birdseye view of the water I try to fish. Are you in town? I thought you were in Jacksonville a while back.

I was down there for the past three months but I have returned. Give me a heads up next time you plan on coming to town and we’ll do the river run.

Nice .

MM posted on Sharkskin a while back(few months?). said he had tried a sample. at 2X or 3x the cost of SA ultra 4 ill probably hold. i am absolutely sure that the limiting factor in my FF is not the distance of the line. course with the total cost of a FL fly trip $50 aint much in the grand scheme.
i cant get the search feature to work to find MM post but i might have screwed it up trying to download oversized avatars before i resorted to the directions.

we dont need no reservations we dont need no cruise control

Been thinking abot a Cub but agree they have gotten out of sight…sold the Pitts over the winter and hate not having a plane now. The Luscomb’s can still be found at a bargin compared to the Cub.

I tend to be pretty hard on the fly lines and usually they don’t last very long due to fishing in the oyster rakes.

What is chiefly needed is skill rather than machinery.

S1tpilot,
Have you looked into an old C-140? I believe you can get one for under 30k but after having something sporty like the Pitts that probably wouldn’t be the ticket for you. Where did you keep the Pitts?

Sometimes kept the Pitts next door (Coosaw Island) but most times it stayed in Allendale. Lived out west for about 3 years and my hanger mate had a C185…would love a 185 on floats but they have just gotten too expensive for my blood.

Did you keep it a John Sanfords? His strip is alot of fun to fly into. There are always three or four pitts at the annual fly in.

My pitts was there this past Jan but someone else was flying it…never kept it there at another strip it was kept at.

Got you. There were three there this year but only John and another guy were flying. The wind was rediculous and as you know those pine trees look awful close with a crosswind.
