Wanted to see if anyone has ever written an article for a magazine and how they went about it. I am keeping a journal on our 9 day outing in Colorado in 1 week and was wanting to see about writing an article about it to a magazine. Currently am deleting 7 memory cards worth of photos to get ready for this epic trip.

Ive been published a few times in The Drake, and SCOTF… I would say the best thing you can do for yourself is just go on the trip… write about it, and please for the love of god don’t write some hotspotter/how to article. Be original, write about the “trip”… look deeper than the fish or the pretty trees and bushes, and really write… Then, once its written, read it over. If you’re happy with it (sometimes you won’t be)… find an editor that will read it as well. Some of the local mags such as timeline may be willing to read it for you. Even if they don’t use it, the ■■■■■■■■ is priceless… if they like it, maybe they’ll buy it…
My point in all this is this… don’t write the piece with the intention of it being a magazine article… just write it for its own sake… if it ends up in print, so be it, if not, you still have written it down and will have that forever. There are enough “outdoor” writers in the world, filling our fishing magazines with “destination” and "How to " articles… be better than that…
Good luck, and if you want someone to proofread it, I will gladly do it… But be warned… I will be honest.

P.S- I’ll share one of my favorite quotes with you as well…

Thanks. That’s some very helpful information. I’ll see how it goes.

Bulldog, where in CO are you headed? Lived here about 20 years and explored quite a bit.

You need to get away from Denver. I have fished the front range quite a bit including the Arkansas (Royal Gorge), South Platte River (north, south and middle forks), and North Platte river outside of Walden. These rivers get hit hard from folks from Denver and Colorado Springs. So heading further west of Denver will get away from the heavy pressure. A buddy loves fishing the San Juan out by Creede. Gunnison and the Tayler river are good. Also Roaring Fork south of Glenwood Springs. Oct 13 is first big game rifle season, so a ton of hunters will be out, but less anglers. I love October in the mountains, but dress warm and have a good sleeping bag if camping. Gunnison and San Luis valley will be in the teens at night, so I use a zero degree rated bag and still get cold (wear a sleeping cap, holds in heat). Day time temps are awesome, and you’ll sleep in letting it warm up. Have fun.
