I want to buy a good to excellent condition used or new YETI Roadie or Pelican 20. I’m not going to drop $250 for one of these things so I’m hoping someone has one sitting around they want to get rid of or won as a door prize or something. I know it’s a crapshoot, but Charleston Fishing folks have surprised me many times in the past.
New would be ideal, but used will work, too. I’m not looking for anyone’s junk, smelly, or trashed cooler but normal scratches and wear and tear is fine. I’d like to spend $150 or less including shipping costs, depending on condition. I’m in Spartanburg County but get down to Lake Murray monthly if that helps for the exchange. PM me.
andyb: The RTIC looks interesting if they actually ever produce them and sell them. Preordering for a 60-90 day wait seems sketchy. But we’ll see.
leadenwahboy: I checked out the K2, that might be an option if no one replies with one of the others I was asking for.
Interestingly, I thought I’d like that handle on the Roadie. Something about it that sucks? Is the K2 strap really that convenient?

It’s impossible to throw the Roadie on your shoulder. You’re stuck carrying it at the end of your extended arm, next to your side.
With the K2 you can throw it over your shoulder and free up a hand. I have hiked my K2 a long ways on my shoulder and not worried about it, while also being able to carry something else in that hand.
I’ve used both, and the K2 is the more user friendly “portable” cooler.
compare price, dimensions, and weight. these are taller than other brands in same size range, which is good if you want to stand on yours. i found the model i wanted on ebay with lower price and built in tie down rings. think it came from NC. pic http://old.charlestonfishing.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=157243
Somebody probably should’ve warned you that the word “Yeti” is a cuss word around you and you’ll only get ridiculed for owning one…and God forbid you have a Yeti sticker on anything you own.
Surprised you got this far and didn’t get the standard “my $35 Igloo is just as good as any Yeti” comment. Lol!

Haha! Yeah I’ve read the hatin’ YETI threads. I wasn’t planning on bragging or stickering up my truck-just using the thing. They make a good product, they are just out of my price range for a back seat cooler if I buy new. When I needed a 4 day dry camping cooler I bought a Pelican 45…and couldn’t be happier.
Honestly you’ll be hard pressed to find one that low. Roadies resale pretty high.
Also some things to know about Yeti: the warranty only applies to the original owner – and so far I am having a hard time getting them to even stand by their warranty. I had a reel hit the corner of my roadie and it put a solid dent and crack in the lid. Apparently my 10# fishing reel is non normal stress to the company that advertises by showing a grizzly beat the cooler to hell and suffering barely worse damage. Or the videos of the big burley guys intentionally trying to trash the cooler, the jeeps on 4 yetis and the trucks with one wheel over the cooler.
So buyer be warned, if you do manage to hurt or damage that 250-1000.00 cooler you better hope it was done by a bear because that’s what they were made for was to be bear proof.
stanjwarren: Yeah I figured it would require luck to get one for the price I was shooting for-but you never know if you don’t ask.
Good info on the warranty and durability. I could easily see something 10lbs. falling onto mine considering how I intend to use it!
Ok, I’ll be that guy…I love all three Yeti coolers I own. I have a Roadie 20, 65 Tundra, and a 105 deep. I’ll be adding a Hopper 30 (their new soft sided cooler bag) to the mix soon. I’ve used them to keep cold stuff cold and I’ve used them to keep hot stuff hot and they have yet to fail on me. I weigh a tad more than 10lbs (more like 262lbs) and I stand on my Yeti while fishing. I’ve even had my fishing buddy stand on it with me (he weighs a solid 250lbs) to get a better vantage point to see some tailing reds. That’s over 500lbs standing on the coolers and it never creaked, cracked, wiggled, or flexed. I don’t know how Yeti handles their warranties because I have yet been able to damage one to the point I had to. I’m not one of those guys that “baby” their high-priced gear. In fact, I’m the complete opposite. I spend the money I do on my gear because I know it will take whatever I put it through. If it doesn’t, I never buy it again and chalk it up as a lesson learned. People may buy their first Yeti because of Yeti’s marketing strategies, but they buy their next one(s) because they deliver on what they say they will do. If their sales were based solely on their advertising and not the quality of their product, they wouldn’t still be in business and other cooler companies like Engle, K2, Orca, and Pelican wouldn’t be comparing themselves to Yeti. All are respectable coolers in their own right but do you want to buy a cooler that compares themselves to another brand, or do you want to buy the brand that everyone else compares themselves to.
I was one of the biggest Yeti “haters” on the planet. I used to talk crap about people that would spend that kind of money on a cooler. I was the “well my cooler works just as a good as a Yeti” guy. Then I won one at a banquet. I decided I would trash this thing just to prove my point. What the heck, it didn’t cost me anything but a $20 raffle ticket. Well, that’s a lie. It cost me the price of a 65 Tundra and a 105 deep because once I saw what this cooler was capable of,
Here’s something to consider about warranties, and the reason I don’t own a Yeti anymore…my first one, within 2 months of ownership got a broken rubber latch. I called Yeti hoping to get a replacement sent my way, and their solution was to tell me to go buy a latch kit from my nearest retailer.
Fast forward 2 years later, I bought an Orca 56. My dog chewed one of the latches up, so I called them to get some latches as there are no Orca retailers around. Orca’s warranty solution was to mail me TWO(2) latches in the mail, no questions asked, for FREE.
Take it for what it’s worth, but it put a sour taste in my mouth.
I do, however, own a Yeti Coldster and a tumbler, both perform flawlessly. But if you read the bottom, unlike MOST of their coolers (there’s now a facility in the Phillipines) the koozies and tumblers are made in China. That kind of erks me as well.
…Haters gonna hate, but I love mine. Granted I didn’t use the stickers. Just not much of a sticker guy.</font id=“red”> The McClellanville boat ramp sticker on my truck is the only one.
I’m not much of a sticker guy either, but if someone has a Roadie or Pelican 20 covered in stickers and they want to let it go for a good price, I can work with that. Nothing that WD40 or Goof Off and some white Scotchbrite won’t take care of !
Archer I am a fan as well, up until this warranty business. I bought the roadie after loving my 45 and plan(ned) to buy a 75 for bait, but if they won’t stand behind their product and fix it- I’ll be sure to make the effort to spread the word about their warranty responses. They were first to the scene and it’s a great cooler, but in some cases being first doesn’t always grant you the throne forever. That’s why none of us are on MySpace anymore right?
I don’t have anything against a Yeti other than they are over priced. I have a Igloo Sportsman, which looks almost identical to a Yeti with exception to handles, works just as good and is just as durable, yet half the cost. If a good deal came up on one, I would buy it, but I wont pay retail for one. Too many other brands out there that are just as good or close for a lot less. One thing I heard, but have never verified is that Yeti coolers were a lot cheaper when they first came out, but they weren’t selling, so they jacked the price up, made them a ststus symbol and every yuppie redneck wannabe had to have one. Not sure if that is bull or not, but it sounds like it could be true, who knows…
My wife works for a yeti dealer, so I got two 65qt yeti coolers super-cheap a while back. I would have never purchased one for full retail, but for the special promo price I had to get them. I wish they would have allowed me to get larger coolers at that price, but after lifting one loaded with ice, my back is happy I didn’t.
They have exceeded my expectations, and keep ice better than the insulated box on the back of my key west 2300. I have been offshore fishing them for about a year now and they still look and smell like new. No more crushed lids for me.
I think all the roto-molded coolers are about the same thing. Find one that is priced right that has nice handles and latches. Yeti and K2 have the nicest latches IMHO.
