I am looking for a net to drag behind a center console or well boat. I am not sure what all I will need, a friend and I are looking to try it.
I’m sorry do you have, must have, a large enough boat , but aside from that I have forty foot net hand made with deep pocket but not for use behind a boat with doors even if they are small doors. I also believe the State of S.C has a lot to say about your idea. but if you want the nice net I will look up the price. At this point I really don’t know what else I can say. Oh yes! Be very very careful!

We used to do that a lot in north Carolina, but Im not sure it is legal here in SC. You should check the regs first.
New River Nets in NC will make you any type of gear you like. There is also another guy near Shallotte who makes them
You must get a trawler vessel permit from the SCDNR , if you were going to pull any type of trawl behind your boat. If you look on craigslist, in Louisiana you will find plenty of nets for sale with doors. Or you can contact Beaufort marine supply in Beaufort South Carolina and they will custom make a net for your boat. If you get a trawl permit you will not be able to recreational (bait) shrimp in the fall.

As Sells said, nets are easy to get. First thing you need is a permit , $125 http://www.dnr.sc.gov/licenses/commercialpricing.html. Then you need a good knowledge of the laws about when and where you can pull it, etc. Here is a summary of those laws http://www.dnr.sc.gov/licenses/pdf/fy2016trawlrulesandmaps.pdf.
Here is the complete Title 50 code of laws which regulates fish, game, and watercraft http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/title50.php and here is the section that you have to know and understand http://www.scstatehouse.gov/code/t50c005.php.
Get your equipment together and go get 'em.

Unless things have changed, this is what I always called a kicker boat and it can pull when and where the regular shrimp boats pull
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
The State of South Carolina does not allow dragging a net with an behind a boat inshore but it has to be 3 mile off shore.
Or in the mouth of an inlet at least 3 miles wide. The few places that you can do it inshore are pretty crowded at times.
We did it for years. I miss having at least 300lbs of shrimp put up in freezers, but I also don’t miss driving all the way down there and spending the weekend and not catching squat, either.
Learning how to do it is 3/4 the battle. The pain in your back and the pain in your wallet is the other 1/4. It’s not as easy as some people try to make it sound.

In the past when I’ve gone shrimping down around Beaufort, I’ve seen commercial shrimp boats pulling in Port Royal Sound.

The chart you get with the permit will tell you where it is legal to pull! We pull at the mouth of S.H. sound off shore of the tripple posts at Otter island! The lic. goes from July to July. I pull with a 23 CC with a 115 Yam. it works great with a 25’ net and 2x4 doors, just have plenty of ice and a good back. With out a TED you can not use any mechanical devices such as a winch or boom it must be all human labor!! Have done well in over the past few years, this look live a banner year! Watch out for the big boats, they will run you over!
