Sorry sold my SOCOM 16. Looking for the 18" Scout Squad myself. the 16" just seemed to short for me on an M1A.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled.

Thanks! I would go with either version. Anybody use galleryofguns and have it shipped?

Found one, got it on the way. Thanks!

Anybody got any good optic recommendations?

BTW I’m way past making 1000 yard shots. Can’t hardly see that far. 200 is good enough. Red dot?

Nice.

What are you going to use this for?

Depends on what you want to spend. The Aimpoint mentioned is the best, but I like my budget Vortex red dot. Hard to swallow $800 on a red dot for blasting. Maybe if I was in Afghanistan.

You keeping the stock or gonna swap it out for the Walnut furniture?

I agree with the Vortex being the best budget option out there. The Strikefire II is very popular and for a little more, the Spitfire gives you an option between a 1x and a 3x optic.

Thanks all. I will check out the Vortex, don’t know anything about them.

Zombie attacks, house, farm and truck rifle. Nothing fancy, just looking for solid reliability.

Don’t really care, so long as nobody tells my wife what it costs
I don’t plan to go to Afghanistan and do battle, but I had a battle with 3 coyotes last night that almost won the fight against my puppy. I prefer to win.

Probably keeping the stock, Geronimo.

I use the Vortex Strikefire II and love it. Have it on my Ruger 30 16" gun. Was out shooting clay pigeons from 35 yds with it and never missed a beat.

I have it mounted forward in the scout position like you will and found the eye relief and sight acquisition great. You might want to try the cantilever mount first and see if your irons will still work as backup. If they won’t, I would just go with the low AR style mount. They sell it 2 ways.

That rifle is made for the iron sights on it. Competitions are with irons. They’re that good.

The sights are that good, I agree, but not everyone’s eyes are that good anymore. Lol!!

I figure the open sights will usually be fine too, at least in the daylight. I’ll seldom shoot it past 100 yards or so anyway. Can’t hardly see further than that anywhere around here, woods are too thick.

Mine sure aren’t, and I’m not too vain to admit it either [:I] Just got to face the facts of age. There was a time when I could make a 1000 yard shot with open sights. Not today. That time is past, nor do I need to either. That being said, I would like to get a good optic that will work in all light (or dark) and still allow the use of the fixed sights.

Budget? There ain’t one. I’m not putting a $100 scope on a $2000 rifle.

Thanks, but that’s a rifle, not a gun

Very nice Larry. My brother gave me an M1 Garand for Christmas. Can’t wait to go out and shoot it.

You shooting clay pigeons with a rifle? Thrown clay pigeons? I’ll go home now.

Larry I like the vortex optics I have on my rifles… Great equipment for the money.

Thanks Adam, and everyone who replied!

Now it’s time to search for some magazines and ammo.

Capt. Larry Teuton

CMI mags are tough to beat for the money for that rifle.

As far as ammo, I’ve never heard of that rifle being finicky. That particular platform is a relatively loose tolerance weapon. If you’re looking for some range ammo, I like the Federal M80…

But if you’re looking for a hunting load I like the Hornady Superformance 165gr SST or the Winchester Supreme 150gr Razorback XT.
