Wanting to get it added and was wondering who out there had it already? Will be primarily used for costal and offshore fishing. Although is not as expensive as radar ect, it’s not cheap to me and wanted to know how everyone who’s used it feels. It will be paired with the Garmin 7610xsv Chartplotter. Thanks in advance.
are you talking about the wm-3 module to get sirus/xm weather wind conditions?
had the same conversation recently.
the response/question to me was?
when you go fishing do you look at the weather report for the day…
answer: yea the whole week normally… even if I am not fishing I’m checking for a open good day…
so do you have a radio: (he knew the answer)
yea you installed my fusion ipod thing the dongula and ran the wired remote with new speakers…
so what are you paying for???
idk…
so if you get caught in the fog on the way out or home what woudld you rather have a radar that will overlay and show you hazards or a weather program?
and that’s kinda where I sit. I am sure the program is nice and the weather/instant updates are helpful… but in live on board running the boat id much rather have that radar even if I’m creeping my happy as along at 1kt white knucked staring at my simrad zoomed in lol…
in the end by the time you get the weather station attachment install it, pay for a year of subscription your probably very close to a 3g radar unit that will give you a much better piece of mind.
for me:
wm3=699.xx
the xm weather package
54.99/month
Buy 1 Year for $604.89

You save $54.99
Buy 2 Years for $1,209.78— Introductory Rate

simrad 3g radar
1,299.00
its basically a was on price… its a bit more upfront… but overall its basically the same general pricing.
we have the weather and radar
both are great for offshore
satelite weather has saved us from numerous storm fronts especially in the summer
would not want to be offshore without both
I’ve been offshore many times without either one, always came home, but given the choice of only one, I’ll take radar.

Xm weather is great and extremely accurate. Gives you size, speed, and direction of the storm. Also tells you if lightning strikes have been observed or not from each cell. It’s a great tool to add for safety and confidence offshore. Also gives a very detailed wind report. I have used both this and radar and to be honest I found myself using this alone for weather and radar only for running at night. Although if I were forced to choose I would side with Larry and say radar. But I don’t think you will be at all disappointed with Sirius.
Thanks for all the input. Ended up getting the XM weather package for now and working on saving for the radar. I wanted primarily weather first so XM seemed the way to go. Anyone that has it already linked to a Garmin Chartplotter, feel free too give a rookie some tips. Thanks again
You can get XM weather without the radio part, $29 for most of the bells and whistles, and you can suspend service for up to 7 months …
It is really nice to have sea surface temp overlay as well.

XM Weather is good for:
- Tracking thunderstorms up close, locally, and regionally
- Viewing fronts
- Easy access to buoy data (wind, waves)
- Viewing marine alerts / warnings / statements.
I found the water temperature was not as useful for me (I use Ruthers charts ahead of time). It will not help you avoid objects in the fog or at night!
Never had XM but don’t want to do with out my radar, wish I had it on my lake boat!
