xm weather

Thinking about adding xm weather on boat. Any pros and cons appreciated

Updated fairly often and pretty accurate from my experience with it. It’s not a substitute for radar but it’s a great addition. Depending on what service you subscribe for you can even get sea conditions, wave height, and wind speeds for any given location.

there is a little delay on images but overall I love it. it has saved us from getting clobbered by storms a few times, lightning strike detector is helpful, sea surface temp correlates well with actual temps as well. now that I have it would not want to go offshore without it.

Worth every penny in the summer when your offshore.

I think its $30 or $40 a month. I think there are different packages based on what you want. My buddy has sst enabled on his boat. I like it for lighting strike activity and storm movement when out fishing.

Not trying to hi-jack trend . I just purchased a garmin 942xs and thinking about xm weather. The gxm52 antenna is $500-600 and after looking on eBay I found other ones for much less . Can use one of these models? For example one was the GXM 31

I use a GXM 31 with a Garmin 545S. Works OK for the big picture …

I got the XM weather installed last year in May. The little bit we used it last year riding around the coast def. made me appreciate having it. Plan to dig into the features a little more this year.

I love it. I can see the direction a storm front is moving and dodge it if possible.

I have XM weather and like it very much. I do not have radar (I would but the boat is a little small for it). One thing to keep in mind - XM will allow you to suspend your subscription for several months at a time. I generally activate mine April through November and then let it go inactive for several months. That stretches your subscription a bit.
