Hit the reef around 8:30 this morning. Water was great today, ran 30 mph both ways. Hit our limit on vermillion and caught a few legal BSBs. Caught triggers, grunts, ringtails, and threw back plenty of illegals. Some hooks were spit and others were straightened so there’s still plenty of action. Water temp was 68. Lot of boats out today.
In that territory you need to be prepared to catch big fish, it would suck to lose a nice grouper to cheap hooks. Check out owners gorilla live bait hooks.
Nice looking cooler. About the owner live bait hooks, are they ok to use for bottom fishing because they are not really circle hooks. Or do they curve in enough to qualify?

that’s great advice right there…and you guys are dialing it in nicely!

They do not qualify as circle hooks and thus are illegal for use in federal waters for species in the "snapper grouper" complex.

Well as long as we have hijacked this thread, Redstripe in my opinion you would not need to use circles for gulps. But in that vein, I think there may be some questions better not asked. For instance, if I drop a sabiki or bucktail down that has J hooks, all is well. If I bait that same rig with squid or a cigar minnow, does that become a no no? Probably. But last week I was out using…and before you shake your head and say OMG, another fffffin CF jack whatever…let me explain…Twizzlers to catch bsb for the film we entered in the Charleston Angler GoPro film festival next week. Anyway, the ingredients listed on the Twizzler package were both NATURAL and ARTIFICIAL flavors. Does the fact that there is surprisingly something natural in a twizzler mean that it constitutes a “natural” bait? I suspect even the man would be hard pressed to argue that real cherry flavor is a ‘natural’ bait for bsb, but how much natural stuff goes into gulp baits to entice bsbs to eat them? Skinneej, wisdom?
Well I know there are other sections for sharing information and techniques but I don’t mind getting hijacked. This site is used to help everybody out if they need advice on something, just no gay porn.
