YAK Trip

Colleton to Edisto Givhans anyone ever done this?

I know a bunch of Boy Scouts that did the Stokes Bridge to Givhans Ferry. They said it was a good trip. About 6 hours.
Definitely beware around downed trees because of cotton mouths.

So much water, So little time

Another is Canady’s at hwy 15 down to Givans. About the same time or the next leg above that. From Wetstones down to Canady’s.

Canady’s is where I am putting in. I fugure 7+ hours. 23.6 mile. This comes out to 3.3mph which doesn’t mean much. I want to stop and look around, eat ect. Then stay at Edisto for 2 days.

Anyone interested in coming? Looking at Feb 29th

you talking about going all the way to edisto island? hmmm.
This can turn into a nightmare if the tides and weather don’t cooperate. Not many camp area the last 1/3 of trip. Its been a while but remember it was tough.

no no, canday’s (colleton state park) to Givhans state park. I just seen that typo. 23 miles

Well the weather was posted today. Looks good for the 29th. Anyone up for the adventure?

I’ve done that trip 4-5 times, keep your lifejacket on if the water is moving like it is now. Check out the treehouses if no one is using them. They are cool.
I may meet you if the girl wants to go. How are planning on shuttling?

Right now there is room to improve. (Meaning: I am still working on some things) As far as the shuttle. I have seen 2 options. 1) Everyone drives to Colleton and then does the trip. Leave the yak with the Ranger at the station OR depending on the time. We can pull everything up to my camp and then Jamie (the wife) can watch it. I will drive everyone back to there cars. 2) Depending on how many people come, The yak company that is right there at the landing will shuttle for $25. If there is a few people this may be the best way. Not sure. Right now there is Me and a buddy in my yak and another guy Ed going. Hopefully a few more will show up. I posted the trip on the “show and go” for lowcountry paddlers.

I went out last Saturday and looked at Stokes Bridge, Mars landing and Colleton. The water is moving pretty fast right now.

I thought the treehouses were above Colleton?

If you have something to add please do. I am new at this planning stuff. I could use some help. IYO is there room (time) for a panfish lunch along the way? If we drift and or throw a few lines when we stop. Might catch a little something. I know we could also get skunked. So bring a lunch. I have room in my yak to carry a little extra. ???

The treehouses are just above Colleton but, are booked thru them there I think.

Just talked to nature adventures outfitters they cannot shuttle that day. I am going going to call and talk with the Ranger there. Maybe he can help.

Didn’t know you were camping, I’m up for that. Give me your phone # again.
Scott

Yep this is the first time the wife and little one will be out. The boys and I went camping with the church. We have all stayed in the backyard a few times.

Saturday looks like a bad day to camp. I hope things change before then. Wife isn’t happy already. If it blows over she will be good to go.

Anyone else up for this trip??? So far there is 4 or 5 people going.

Edit: The park can’t help with shuttle service. I tried!

Update:
Did the trip last Friday. Good times, really tested the weight limit of the yak, and my phone. Only one lived. Won’t test that EVER again. Only had to beach and go through the woods one time do to a tree in the water. No way to safely cross over it. Trip time was just under 7 hours, paddle time was 5 hours. 21.4 miles. The water was really high and moving. There are some neat things on that river. I have placed another vacation request for 23 May 08. I want to do it again. Anyone want to come let me know. This is also a Friday. This is already a long weekend, make it longer.

Bill,
What kind of yak do you have? Is it a SOT? Trying to decide whether to take my SOT or canoe down the edisto when I do the trip in April. Did you camp one night or do it all in one day? I might be up for the trip in May. Keep me posted.

Brian

I have a sit in tandem. Can you do it with a SOT? sure IMO. Scott may have some more info on that. He has done it a few time.
