Hey guys, got a question for yall. I have been trying to get a yak, so I can hopefully get on fish while im by myself. I need something cheap, as Im going to the Citadel next year, and i would rather not drop money on something thats just gunna sit in my garage for a year. I went to dicks today, and found a sit in model for about 550 (pretty much my price range, no more than 600). Rodholders, fairly nice seat, dry storage, all that. Im fairly small (5’7 @ 135), and it seemed to be fairly comfortable. I didnt like the idea of the sit in at first, but once i got it on the ground and all that, my knees came to the opening, so i didnt feel as confined and felt a bit better about it. It is about 50 lbs or so id say, and about 12.5 ft. long. My question is, will this suffice for my first yak, or will i want to buy a new one in 6 months because I am unhappy? I am sticking only to inshore (bushy and maybe iop), so what do yall think?
Sounds like a classic Fisher Price beginner boat mine was a Pelican Castaway 116, which I still have, they are about $469 at Sports Authority. Nutin wrong with either boat… Good boats to learn the waters and how to fish from a yak… if you decide you don’t like it no real harm done and you can always upgrade and have more then one… just ask Too Busy

ok sounds about right ha. Thank ya, hopefully soon I can get out there with yall and get my first red from a yak!
WT,
My yak is 12 feet, a sit inside Pungo 120. I am completely satisfied. Got it through Craigslist for $400, with rod holders, a nice paddle, straps, pads and an anchor.
I love this little boat. It’s only 50 pounds, and the cockpit is huge, with no feeling of being confined. Lots of guys want SOT because their legs get hot in summer. Sitting inside keeps the sun off my legs, and I do not get cooked due to the huge cockpit opening.
There are some diehard yak fisherman here that love 100 pounds of stuff, 5 rod holders, enough storage for a dead body, etc. I’m not that guy. I love to keep it simple. The Pungo has a dry well. I take minimum tackle and one rod, no net, etc. Only downside is that if you stand up, you will probably get wet!
If you want to give mine a try, just let me know.
Good luck!

What can I say, I’m a yak ho.
My Craiglist addiction has let me buy, sell, trade and paddle abunch of different yaks in the past year. I’m hoping to get a spot as a professional tester.
White Taco, You’ll be fine with the Little Tykes starter yak. Most 12-14 foot sit ins are dry , stable, and quite a bit faster than their sit on top brothers. Toss a couple of pool noodles in it for flotation in case you get swamped.

Ok sounds good, I went to sports authority tonight, and I saw that castaway sit on top, for 470, its hard to pass up for me…so I think that may be the one although it is a sit on top.
I got the castaway tonight, hopefully get it in the water next week sometime. Any good rookie spots yall can reccomend with not alot of boat traffic?
Hey taco, I got a green castaway the I put 2 flush mount rod holders on. That boat is much more agile than my pungo 140 or redfish. I use it for fast moving water and usually fish light (artificials). A good trolling boat.
Watch the wind because it doesn’t take waves well.
to be honest…the first time might be picture quality…great entertainment for everybody but me…but im pumped. haha
What CM said… not very dry but a good boat Congratz
