Yakin the ICW

So I finally gave in a bought a yak this past December. I have only been out on a few places…Shem Creek, Sol Legare, Oak Island, etc. Well all I hear about is copahee and ICW this or wando that. Well i’m not lookin for honey holes by any means, but maybe some tips on where to put out, different areas that might be good to try. I don’t know any of the names of the places really so saying a creek name or something like that wont really help unfortunately. Any info is appreciated. I’m hoping to get something from this and maybe try to head out in a week or so. I’m down to go with others too if anyone would like to offer…

Put in at Folly. It is one of easiest places to put in and tons of open area to cruise. If you have alot of time you can paddle towards morris island from there or towards the stono. Some very good fishing spots around. There are also some docks on the river to catch some reds off of.

If you are fishing the upper Wando on a moving tide, fish around some of the private docks. They hold a lot of fish. Mostly underslot reds, but an occasional bruiser. If you put in at the IOP Marina ($5.00 parking fee if you don’t have a trailer/$10 if you do), paddle up Morgan Creek (turn right out of the IOP Marina). Go past the bridge and fish the grass lines. The big key is structure. Go out at low tide and scout various spots for structure that can only be seen during low tide. The beauty of a yak is you can drop it in anywhere. Fish around the Pitt Street Bridge in Mt. P. (Hint, it’s on Pitt Street and very easy to find).

This weekend and next are going to be busy getting ready, then fishing the IFA tourney. After that, you’re welcome to join in.

you can start with a search of public boat landings. Kayaks are easier because you can toss them in the water anywhere there’s public access to water.

Thx for all the info above. I was primarily talking about the Mt.P side of things though. Although I have tried around folly and J.I. and come up with a little bit of luck. I know its possibly “slower” fishing during the winter, so im not discouraged. But I just hear alot about copahee, etc and wanted to learn more about that area I suppose. More info would be appreciated as well…

had to gadsenville rd. unload the yak, start fishing. copahee can be a dear friend or a beast depending on wind and tide.
pitt st bridge area offers good fishing from the put in up to the ben sawyer bridge
