Yakin the Stono

Hey Folks – Any suggestions for good flats I can easily get to from Sol Legre landing? My usual flats are just too far of a Yak to get to. Also, what are thoughts are Low tide vs high tide winter flats for schooling Reds? My trips this season have been pretty unproductive on the low tide this year. Just not seeing schools movin through.

Go to Google Earth and you can see places around Sol Legare ramp. It’s a long paddle to sand flats before entrance to Folly River or even to channel marker at Kiawah River. I’ve just yakfished along oyster banks along northern shore if you head downstream from ramp. Docks there too.

Yeah it is a LONG paddle… hell it’s a long boat ride to the best flats… Look at the grass edge near the wapoo cut… low tide… Look for 'em staging…

I made that paddle to the Folly sand flats last weekend. It is no joke and I was wiped afterwards! You have to catch the tide/wind just right.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Sunbird-

Do you ever launch your power boat as a kayak mother ship? I was thinking of throwing my 12 ft yak in my 22 ft boat, leaving from Folly ramp and anchoring off channel and yaking onto flats. May try that in a few weeks.

Stickman, it’s a gas taking a boat out with sit-on-top along for skinny waters. Awesome for scouting out the backwaters.

I agree. Did it this past weekend. Got a ride out from a buddy and he watched me get back to the skinny water while he waited another hour to get to the fish. I heard they are coming out with boat racks for Yaks. I’m sold.

a set of thule yak stackers attached to the t top would do the trick.

I’ve been trying for a year to get someone to mothership me out to the big water to I can troll for mahi and bottom bump. everybody has been freaked out about the idea.

I would love to be dropped off on a weed line at about 125’ for a couple hours. Let me know if you find any takers. I’ll run my boat out on a calm day in the summer, but it would be a lot cooler if someone else drove.
