Just had my 4 stroke serviced for a new timing belt. Had not run on the water since October, but started it twice and ran it for 15 mins each time over the winter. Saturday took it to the lake after getting it back from the shop. Couldn’t get more than 4500 rpms even all the way to the floor and 22 mph ( Key West 20.5 WA), on a pretty smooth lake. Thinking the injectors may be a bit clogged; possibly spark plugs need changing. I guess my question is this… by replacing the timing belt, could it have messed up the timing to cause this problem?
it is possible, but not likely
if it were a tooth out on the belt, it probably wouldn’t even run

Thanks , Chris. I took out the injectors and we ran some carb cleaner thru them at high speed with pressure. Them soaked them/ They were not dirty like last time. I did find a split rubber gasket on the injector on the end that shoots out the gas. Wonder if that could be the culprit?
Problem could be your VST filter…I had the same problem with the same motor and that was the culprit. Not sure how to get it out had to take it to a mechanic after getting frustrated but it did the trick.
I had the same problem last year had to change the VST filter and it ran fine after that.
I had that on my suspect list, but didn’t really think too much about it not being cleaned in a while. Thanks.
DEPENDING ON THE YEAR THERE CAN ALSO BE AN NLINE FILTER BETWEEN THE 2 FUEL PUMPS THAT CAN CAUSE A RESTRICTION.
SIMPLE TEST BEFORE YOU START WORKING ON A LOT OF THINGS THAT MAY NOT BE BROKEN…
RUN IT WIDE OPEN IN GEAR ON THE TRAILER AND GIVE IT A SHOT OF STARTING FLUID. IF THE RPMS INCREASE YOU ARE STARVING FOR FUEL.
