Cruising down the Wando one minute and the motor is running great, the next minute it sounds like there is a bag full of gravel flying around in the motor and it shuts down. No alarms, supposedly ethanol free gas, star-tron, sea foam, full of oil, been running great without even a sputter. Took the heads off and there is aluminum “gravel” in cylinders. Piston tops look normal, cylinder walls look good. Any ideas of what it is and how this could happen? Engine is a 1998 Yamaha 150 2 stroke. Just trying to see what I’m in for.
BA BA BOOM!
Blown cylinder rings. Time to get a new power head.

How much $$$$? What causes this type of condition??
$ amount depends on how much you can do for yourself. Generally Carbon buildup is the cause. Don’t give up on the powerhead you have just yet! Have it checked out by a professional, ask some questions, and see if a rebuild is possible. The rebuild isn’t a very tedious process, if you have any sort of mechanical abilities. If you don’t, look for a replacement for your motor.
how many cylinders have the “gravel”
most of the time, the engine can be rebuild after a trip to the machine shop. way less than 1/2 the cost of a new powerhead.
I’m now at www.teamcharlestonmarine.com
It was in a couple of them but the majority of it was in the right side. I guess it was pulled around through the ports? I don’t know about the carbon, the heads had very little buildup in them and the pistons are pretty clean.
I found a site offering a reman 1996 Johnson for around $2150.00. So that would be your ball park figure…a Yamaha might be more…I don’t know. That does not include labor to install.
I definitely take Chris’s suggestion on having it looked at to rebuild.
