Yamaha 150 2-stroke

What do you think about a 2006 Yamaha 150 2-stroke? I only have experience with small 2-strokes and big 4-stroke motors. It seems these 2-stokes were phased out due to emissions but were solid motors. The small 2-stroke I have is loud. I wonder how loud a 150 will be. I would test drive before purchase but is this worth my time. Thanks

Boyscout I have a 2004 150 V-6 2 stroke on a 22’ Sea Hunt and I love it. It is strong especially the midrange and it is surprisingly good on fuel even though it is a carb motor. It has 3 two barrel carbs. I’m not sure the hours on mine as the Yamaha tach was not sold on it new, I think close to 1000 hours. As far as noise it is “normal” I guess, as in not terribly loud. It sounds like a dragster idling, kinda makes me smile. LOL I have had it about 5 years and have no complaints.

I have a 2008 150hp Vmax carbed 2-stroke. Bought it used a couple of years ago from Chris V at Charleston Marine. He strongly recommended it and I have been very pleased with it. I have another friend who was an outboard mechanic and he said “If a Yamaha carbed 2-stroke is running strong now, it will keep on running as long as you maintain it”. He wasn’t so high on the fuel injected 2 strokes, but said they were pretty good too.

It smokes some on start-up, but I am surprised at how low the oil consumption is. I fill the oil tank and don’t even think about it for a couple of months (but always have an extra qt on hand). I’m only running inshore though so not a ton of hours, but I’m on it every weekend.

So check compression, drain a touch of oil from the lower unit to make sure it isn’t milky, then give it a test drive.

great, reliable motor.
mcuh thirstier than a 4 stroke, but also much less expensive, and easier to work on.

I have a carb’d 150 VMax (2005) with a little over 1000 hrs on my 1994 Hewes and that thing is a tank. Tons of speed too, but that’s also due to the size of the boat. Sounds mean, smells mean – it has a washdown port but I like to hook it up to the muffs and run it if it’s not too late since I like how she sounds.

Great motors like everyone else said. Chops like it has a cam in it when idling, and baddazz mean sounding when running on muffs. Plus, if yours is the late model 06’ you can connect it to the NMEA2k systems and see all your info on certain electronics. Unfortunately my 06 Vmax was just outside of the cut for such amenities. Compression test, kick the tires and then take it fishing once it all checks out!
