Yamaha 150 exhaust corrosion

I think our 2011 Yamaha 150 has a hole in the exhaust in the bracket unit. The picture shows the hole that appeared today in the apron. Exhaust was coming out the hole and the motor was louder.

The motor has about 500 hours on it and has always been flushed after every use. We flush it using the flush port and on the muffs every time. Is there anything different we could have been doing to prevent this?

Has anyone had this issue on a 150? If so, what can we expect for the repair to cost?

Looks to me like a bullet hole.

isn’t that part plastic? X2 on a bullet hole.

The apron is plastic, it’s a melted hole, hot exhaust was coming out through it. We were worried about water getting in so we covered it with some tape for the ride back in, it too was melted by the exhaust.

No high heat alarm? I have a F250 and mine is one of the model years that are prone to the exhaust corrosion problem. From what I’ve read most the time it becomes apparent due to the louder noise and the high temp alarm going off but still having full RPM range on the motor. Following this very closely to see what others say here. I have heard it is a very costly repair over $2k, It makes me nervous that I may have this problem somewhere down the line especially considering it is a single engine boat that I take off shore. Always looking to determine ways of seeing early warning signs of a pending failure.

No alarms, I checked the oil level on the water and looked around the lower part of the cowling at the bottom of the motor to make sure nothing was coming up from below. We idled back to the ramp, after we fished of course, and the temp was around 130 the whole way in. I’ve read about the older 225s issue and how they would over heat at idle.

Beaufort B, I didn’t receive your pm, I tried sending myself one to see if it works, that didn’t come through either. May be an issue with the forum. If you want email me at my screen name at yahoo.com

It does look like a bullet hole

Tall Sail Marine

Took it to Charleston marine this afternoon, we’ll find out tomorrow or the next day if it was a bullet. If it was a bullet, it happened while we were running from crab bank to the dynamite hole Sunday morning. We did pass fort Sumter on the way out, but the hole is on the port side. Maybe a sniper at fort moultrie?

So what’s the verdict?

Haven’t received estimate as yet, early next week hopefully. I had mis-heard time frame, thought they said a day or two, was actually a week or so.

Crickets…

Looks like a bullet hole in plastic.

Sorry, I didn’t know anyone was still following this thread. We got the boat back a couple weeks ago, just over a month in the shop.

The pictures below show a hole corroded in the exhaust guide, a transition piece between the power head and the mid section (oil pan, upper casing, exhaust etc) and not a problem you want to have happen to your motor. The hole is in a dry exhaust port of the guide (not exposed to cooling water).

It’s a repair that’ll cost well over $2000 and possibly much higher depending on the situation with available parts, new or used. The parts are not cheap and there is a lot of labor involved. The power head has to come off to start with.

Not sure why it corroded, as stated above it was always flushed after every use. It’s normally stored on a trailer away from salt water. And it’s not a bullet hole, if it were there would be a better story to tell but unfortunately the only story is it’s expensive to fix.

Thank you for the update. I was wondering results as well. So the big question is, is this common or just a one off? Perhaps a defect in the original part that caused premature failure or does this happen often?

I’ve heard of one other on the 150, hole was in a slightly different location, closer to power head. As you noted before, it’s was a common issue on the bigger motors for a certain year range. Hoping it’s just one off. Could have been a bad casting, may have had a thin wall where it corroded through. Need to see a new one to compare, it even then hard to pick up a void without special equipment.

I run regular gas with Yamaha ring free as the only additive. I don’t think it was caused by that, if so then a lot of others would have the problem too. Thinking of contacting Yamaha, if nothing else to at least get an idea of how to prevent it from happening again.

We sent pictures to Yamaha.
this is the first 150 I have ever seen do this.
I saw one F200 do it as well, but it had 2000 hours on it.
the f150 has been out since 2004 I believe, and if it was common, there would be thousands of reports

that corner where it corroded thru doesn’t have a water jacket, my best guess is its a hot spot in the exhaust. It could have been compromised by either a poor casting(and or void), or the engine could have been running lean, causing hotter than normal exhaust temperatures(any other signs of hot spots?). The odds would be a poor casting and or casting void during manufacture.

you are correct, running the engine on the muffs is better than using the flush port.
anyone who says otherwise, is VERY misinformed.
I don’t really know how you could of prevented this.
