Yamaha 150hp 4stroke harmonic balancer???

I have a 2005 Yamaha 150hp 4stroke. I was reading online that the harmonic balancer needs to be replaced as it will fail. Is Yamaha replacing these on a recall (I am for sure out of factory warranty) or do I have to replace it when it fails?

I have approx 250hrs

I had to pay for mine and they are 06 models…

I believe they will go like 3 years past the factory warranty date or something like that… It doesn’t hurt to call them and see what they are willing to do. Is your motor making a whistling/squealing sound?

Oh and if it fails it’s most likely going to tear up some other stuff as well so It’s not wise to let it tear up…

I had an 06 150 that had just went out of warranty by 3 months and that noise Madfire referred to began. I called Yamaha and they covered it.

The manufacture date on my motor was actually 10/05 but I had bought the boat new in March of 06.

I believe the out of pocket cost would be around 6 to 800 bux. Alot cheaper than the damage it will do it it fails. Let alone where you may be if it does.

Give them a call. You may get lucky.

Good luck,

I have a 2006 and yamaha wouldn’t help me out except to discount the part to like 500$. I then did tons of research and bought the part from a place in Florida for around 380$ and did the work myself. Actually very very easy to do. Took like 2.5-3 hours to complete alone. Feel free to pm me for more details:…/mine runs like a top now with only a nice hum while she is running.

I have a 2007 F150. Is it subject to this issue?

Thanks

My 07 had it at 99 hours.

Definitely get the harmonic balancer checked. A friend of mine had to drop $4 grand after his failed and plastic parts got into the internal block. You don’t want that. Neither did my friend.

I have no issues as of now. I was just seeing what Yamaha was doing about it and cost to do the job.

RW,
I’ve got a 2005 as well with about 1200 hours on it. It’s been the best motor I’ve ever owned and has had no issues whatsoever since new. Maybe the 05s didn’t have this issue.

I found these on youtube. Good example of the sound. Before and after replacement.

sometimes Yamaha will help
case by case
u definitely do not want to have one fail
all the plastic pieces get stuck in the oil passages, and the entire motor must be taken apart and cleaned and put back together, and that’s if nothing got damaged from low oil pressure

Whats the cost of replacing? Approx $500???

Not all the motors had issues. There didn’t seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why one motor would have a problem and another wouldn’t.
The motor I just sold was a 2005 with 400 hours, I had my mechanic check the HB and he said it was fine, I guess I pestered him enough that he removed it a second time and checked it over with a fine toothed comb. According to him the HB was in perfect condition.

Had a friend that thought he had heard “the noise” paid to have his HB replaced only to have “the noise” reappear, turned out to be an issue with the waterpump seal.

I do not have the whine, according to the video posted. Just thinking of doing this as preventive.

I found the before new HB video posted below…

i had the start of the whine so i replaced mine, out of precaution. i can’t remember how much it was $500-$600 but that is way better than a new power head.

mine still makes a little of a whine off and on, I was worried about it but my friend told me its a normal yamaha noise that they all make it from time to time.
