Changing water pump on a '96 Yamaha 40 (C40PLR). This part identified as “water seal 2” was in the kit but I have no idea what it is. When I was pulling the old water pump I did not see anything like this installed. I have changed the water pump on my '04 Yamaha 150 before and have never seen anything like this. Not sure if it is used on older or maybe just smaller motors. Anyone know where it goes?

Thanks Chris V. Appreciate the explanation and warning. Good know what the purpose is. Still have a lot to learn. First time I’ve bought a kit that included one. Once Yamaha 90 replied with that diagram and I saw where to look and found the old one. Guess i should invest in a repair manual
