My engine is running smoothly and well. However, once in a while (more often recently) when I pull back to neutural after running between spots, the idle RPMs jump to 2000-3000. Like it is in fast idle when warming up.
Any ideas on what causes this?

could be a stretched throttle cable.

“Well worth the drive!”
there is also a linkage between the carb and the powerpack, on some of the smaller 2 strokes, that has a “sleeve” that will come loose, and allow the throttle to remain slightly advanced. I have also seen something as simple as a loose piece of tubing move around and prevent the linkages from coming back to idle position

As Chris said…could be a easy fix. Get him or someone to check it out. By no means do you want to slam it into gear at that RPM… A lower unit ain’t cheap but fixing it could be !!
