Yamaha cowling latches hard to open? (pics)

Clean them out. Remove one bolt using a 10mm socket, and out comes the bolt, washer, metal latch arm, bellville washer, a black plastic bushing ring, the stainless shaft, another black plastic bushing ring, and the plastic latch.

This is on a 2001 200 HPDI.

These pics are of the starboard rear latch.

Looking down from starboard side. Disregard how the socket and ratchet are on the bolt you see in this first pic. No need to take those loose.

Remove the bolt.

Next, loosen the bolt going into the bottom of the engine pan that’s holding the spring taut. Just loosen it until the spring becomes loose. Then remove the spring.

If your latches are as bad as mine were, you will need to pry the latch arm piece out with a screwdriver like this.

Latch arm removed. Lots of crusted up salt and old grease inside.

Forward is to the right. Rock the latch up and down as you move it and the shaft to the right (will be to the left if you’re doing the port side latch).

Then you’ll have it out where you can clean it and the other parts of the assembly.

Forgot to get pics of all the parts disassembled, but it’s pretty easy just to put things back in how you took them out at this point.

Then, grease the heck out of it all so there’s no air gap to fill up with crud when you put it all back together.

The things flop up and down like brand new now.

Good info Phin, mine are hard to turn, but I have just been keeping them spray lubricated, guess this is my next step… thanks… nice post
