The dealer who sold me my boat w/ a new 70hp told me that he was part of their extended warranty offer last winter. Later I found out he wasn’t and so I didn’t get the extra two year coverage.
Not a huge deal but I was short changed by the dealer.
Yamaha CS says it’s between me and the dealer and hasn’t been any help.
The dealership owner won’t return my calls. Even went to the store and got the cold shoulder from an employee while he was out.
I think I’m out of luck but thought I’d ask around.
I thought it was a Yamaha promotion. I bought one this year and the dealer sent my paperwork into Yamaha and a few weeks later I received my 2 year warranty extension. Is it possible that your dealer didn’t send in the paperwork?
I think that the dealer “misled” me when he assured me on several occasions before, during and after the sale that I’d get the extended warranty at no charge through the Yamaha promotion. When I first talked to Yamaha customer service (Kennesaw, GA) they looked up my motor id number and said it was not registered correctly and the dealer could fix it but Yamaha couldn’t. Then insisted that it’s between me and the dealer and wouldn’t help. I asked them if the dealer had registered for their program and they had no record of that. They did tell me that there was a cost incurred by the dealer to participate in the program. When I got back w/ the dealership I have talked to 3 different people who all say “the owner is working it and will call you tomorrow”. After over 2 months, a dozen calls and one face-to-face visit to the dealer the owner has never returned my calls.
I am pretty certain that he just bs’d me during the sale and now is hiding out the best he can. I’m not looking for a confrontation. I think that I’m screwed but thought I’d ask around to see if anyone had any suggestions.
Thanks for the tip Capt. Jess. Do you know if Tim Haney in the GA office? After I called them back and pushed a little they did call the dealer and then called me back and said “I talked to them and they will call you tomorrow”
I will do that DFreedom. I have a customer ■■■■■■■■ survey from Yamaha that I am going to do and see if that gets anyone’s attention. I’ve given up on the dealer but will certainly never do business w/ them again.
Here is my take.
The dealer is a representative for Yamaha. Every effort should be made to resolve the conflict with the dealer directly. If that fails, then Yamaha should step in and resolve the issue.
I’m sure that any manufacter would not want their product misrepresented, or their representatives (Dealer) stealing from customers. That is exactly what the Dealer is doing! He is stealing from you! The Extended warranty has a monetary value attached to it!
If you produce a “Bill of Sale” dated during the period the Extended Warranty was offered, then you should be entitled to it. Unless the Dealer lied, and there was not an Free Extended warranty offered by Yamaha.
Get a Lawyer if you have to. There is Principal involved here.
PM me the Dealer’s name, so that I can avoid him.
We’re on the same page bkd. I pointed out to the Yamaha customer service that I felt the dealer was their representative/agent but they first refused to get involved. After I had many un-returned messages to the dealer I again called Yamaha and they called the dealer. All they really did was say to the dealer “you should probably look into this” and got the same treatment that I did.
I did purchase the boat/motor/trailer during a period when Yamaha offered a free extended warranty. The dealer assured me (many times) that the extended warranty would come with the motor. That’s the lie he told me. Yamaha told me that they had no record of his business participating in the extended warranty program. And yes, there is a monetary value. Yamaha told me that they sell the 2 year extended warranty for $725.
The dealer is here in Aiken but the owner owns another business here and spends every weekend in Beaufort. I don’t know if he does any business there.
I am happy to say of the 3 new boats I have purchased, 2 of which were at Duncan?s I am happy to say I have been nothing but pleased with the bend over backwards service I have received from both dealers. Especially at Duncan’s. I had my trailer frame crack (which most likely was my fault) and it was after the warranty ran out. They called the manufacture, sent them pictures and they said they would fix it for no charge. They also installed my new electronics when I purchased my last and I was having an issue and there service guy sat out on my boat and spent an hour on the phone with Lowrance getting the information that helped me out. That?s service! One could only hope people would stand behind what they sell. If they misled you the owner should make it right at his expense. That?s how business should be done.
Good luck with getting you issue resolved.
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
For $725 getting a lawyer seems pointless. I would keep after the dealer and like someone else said, if they keep refusing to make it right contact the BBB or possible a local news crew and give them a tip about a business using suspect practices to sell boats. Negative advertising could cost them way more then $725. Either way that sucks for you and hopefully you will never have to get involved with using the warranty you didn’t get.
That’s the way I see it. Not enough money to get a lawyer involved. I already rated the business on Angie’s List and I will do the Yamaha survey and plead my case that way. I checked and the business is not part of the BBB but I will post a review there as well.
Otherwise I plan to keep taking care of the motor and hope I don’t need the warranty anyway.

I am glad that business is good for them and that they don’t need more…

That is a crappy situation for sure. I would post your story on a national message board like the hull truth and send a link to the dealer. It will get their attention…
Tim is at the Ga office. I sure hope you get this figured out! That dealer should be busting his behind to help you with this no matter which end the problem is on<><
Question, was it the owner of the company that personally said the extended warranty was included or was it a salesman that told you? if you don’t have anything in writing then a lawyer is a waste of money, it will be your word against his word, and unfortunately in today’s world a mans word is not what it used to be… and that is just sad that you have to get everything in writing or,well, maybe we would not want to form an opinion on this dealer until we got his side of the story, maybe all of us need to call him and tell him what we have read about this situation and being concerned fellow boat owners and fishermen we wanted to hear what was being done to resolve the problem before we made any future decision on where to purchase boats or motors, and if this dealer is at all concerned he will try to resolve the issue ,if enough people hear about it , bad news travels like a wildfire, and i know if i saw bad reviews on a dealer i would think twice before i made a purchase, Just a thought, and my next question is if he is a yamaha dealer then why isn’t he using the extended warranty that yamaha offers as sales incentives, i am sure yamaha has rebate programs for dealers and all it really cost them is some extra paperwork
