If it’s not one thing, it’s another. Have an issue with my tilt/trim. The other day, the motor would trim up but not down. Could hear the relay clicking when engaging the down , but nothing happening. Same at the helm and at the motor. So, I bought a new relay and went back out to work on it. Had plans to swap the blue and green wires on the relay to see if I could get power to lower the motor. Before I even took the cowl off, I tried the trim. This time, motor went down with no problems and would not up. Hit the button several times and then it engaged and came up. So, my question is, how do diagnose this issue? It has to either be the relay or the trim motor. What’s the best way to figure this thing out?
do you have a volt meter? there are a few other parts in the trim system than just the trim motor and relay. first thing, put the volt meter on the wires going to the motor, while pressing the trim up and then down, see if youre getting voltage. then start working backwards. check the limit switch, check the relays, then check the switch itself.

Just replace the relay, this is a very common Yamaha problem. I had the same intermittent situation you had on two of mine. I have also seen a lot of folks post the same problem on this site.
NO LIMIT SWITCH ON THAT MOTOR.
THERE IS A TRIM SENDER, BUT ITS AN INDEPENDENT SYSTEM.
AN INTERMITTENT PROBLEM IS THE HARDEST PROBLEM TO REPAIR.
GOING UP TAKES SIGNIFICANTLY MORE POWER THAN GOING DOWN, SO LOW VOLTAGE OR LOW AMPERAGE SHOULD SHOW UP WITH AN “UP” PROBLEM BEFORE A DOWN PROBLEM.
IF THE RELAY IS CLICKING, ITS BEING ASKED TO BEFORE THE TASK BY THE SWITCH, AND EITHER ITS BAD, OR IT CANT, AS IN A BAD MOTOR.
UNFORTUNATELY, ITS GOING TO BE VERY HARD TO TELL WHICH ITEM IS AT FAULT UNLESS YOU CAN TEST IT WHILE IT FAILS
I had the same problem with the same exact engine. If your battery is fully charged (ie, it’s not an amperage issue), it’s tough to diagnose. Charleston Marine fixed mine.

Fixed! Thanks for the help guys! Took the multimeter and tested it. Up and down on the trim and about every 6th or 7th time it would fail either going up or coming down. Multimeter showed it was only getting 4-7 volts when failing. Replaced it with the new relay and ran the boat and tested it multiple times without and issues.
