I have a 2005 Yamaha f150 that has developed a starting issue. It starts fine from a cold start but after the motor has run a while and gotten to a normal operating temperature if the motor is cut off and I try to crank it back up within 10-15 minutes i have to turn the motor over for maybe 5-10 seconds before it will start instead of the normal 1-2 seconds. The motor has always eventually started but it makes me nervous that it isn’t starting normally. If the boat sits for 30 mins or more before trying to be restarted it starts normally. Otherwise the motor is running great, no loss of power that i can tell and nothing out of the ordinary. Anyone have any ideas on what could cause this?
Chris, the motor is idling at 600 rpm’s according to yamaha digital tach
that’s a bit low
should be at 700-750
if its getting hotter than normal, and you shut it down, you could be getting “vapor lock” kind of.
thanks Chris, is there anything other than the water pump or water blockage somewhere in the motor that could be causing it to run hotter than normal. It seems to be pumping plenty of water but maybe a water pump replacement would be an easy place to start and see if it helps.
