Had the wife and kids as well as sister in law on the boat today. Ran fine for first 30 minutes then started to die out at 3100-3200 rpms. Couldn’t get up on plane and wouldn’t really let me get over 10-12 mph. Never had this issue before and didn’t know if it’s starving for fuel or something I can check at the house before deciding where to drop it off at.
Thanks in advance for an info
I have seen the exact same thing due to a stopped up filter. Not the large fuel filter/water separator but the very small filter on the front of the engine. It can be a PITA to get out of the plastic housing it lives in. Take it off the engine and blow through it. Should be NO resistance to your blowing. If you feel any back pressure, change it out. Only cost a few bucks for a new one at the Yammer shop
Well here’s the update. Changed the small filter on front of the engine. Took the boat out today and with just me in the boat still couldn’t get above 4000rpms. Would run for about 15 min then start slowly going down. Speed and Rpms would gradually drop. Any more suggestions are appreciated in advance before getting on a waiting list to be looked at.
there is a filter inside the VST, and another one between the VST and the injectors.
you have a classic dirty fuel system. if you only clean a part here and there, you can recontaminate the new parts with dirt.
you need to clean the boat tank, the boat filter, flush the boat fuel lines.
you need to change the primary on the motor, flush the lines on the motor.
open up and clean the VST and change the filter, and flush the lines.
replace the inline filter, clean the injectors, and flush the fuel rail.
its about a $600 job
Get rid of old gas!
Change water separator filter
Change filter on front of motor
Look up how to change the VST filter. It looks worse than it is. (This was my last move, and it fixed the motor.
Depend on age of boat, consider new fuel lines. Mine were shedding small rubber partials that clogged the filters on the injectors.
After all this, motor ran good. On a flip moment, I sent the injectors to have them balanced. Wow, really smoothed things.
None of this is super hard w/ University of YouTube
Some good information for you, I purchased the manufactures book for my engine @ $100.00 and it’s worth it’s weight in gold
Some information from that book.
Remove old gas, you can return it to the Charleston Land Fill
Change all fuel filters , Boats.Net has good prices. Boats net also has all the drawings for all boat motors for all parts to be replaced. Including fuel screens ,filters Etc.
A new fuel filter attachment Yamaha is putting in, on the engine, fuel/ water separator. About the size of a long pill bottle, you can do it your self.
I installed a new Yamaha canister filter under the back seat, seems to help.
had a similar problem years ago, used E-10 gas it clogged the injectors up, I only use 100 % gas now, and all Marvels Mystery Oil, never has a problem since.
I know this may sound crazy but last year I had a similar issue and I knew I had a clean fuel system. Turned out my fuel bulb fell apart inside and every time I tried to throttle the fuel would get clogged by the loose parts. If it rattles it’s busted.

Pathfinder 2200 tournament
This exact thing has happened twice on my 2003 Yamaha F150. Ironically it was on my 22 Pathfinder too.
First time we cleaned the VST filter, didnt do anything. Then pulled the injectors, and rigged a system to shoot fuel out of them on the bench. One was clogged pretty good. We replaced the tiny mesh screens in them and flushed fuel through them both ways. Put them back in and the boat ran great.
For about a year…
Same issue happened. Got new injectors for $100 total. Put them in, boat is running like a stallion.
A clean fuel system means no headaches. I believe the crappy fuel these days has more paraffins in it. I defer to Chris. I use fuel treatment every know and then to try and keep the injectors clean…and Racor filters that you can see the gas/water in. Works for me.
Update on the boat. Dropped the boat off to Chris V and picked back up about a week or so ago. Had the entire fuel system cleaned and whatever other magic he worked. I must say the boat runs better now than when I first bought it. Quicker hole shot and definitely smoother. Recommend Chris V to anyone who may be having issues. Been using him for years.
Been there, done that! I’ve changed all fuel lines, all filters, removed injectors and had them tested, etc… Listen to Chris V… I’d first completely drain the tank and clean it the best you can, add new/fresh 0 ethanol gas (all I run), add some Seafoam, and then take it to a shop and pay them the $$ to have it done right. I have made the mistake of changing all the filters (including the VST) myself, and out of order, only to end up paying more $$ in the end. Of course this is only my $.02.
DIRTY FUEL SYSTEM.
INJECTORS AND VST FILTER
ANYTHING IN THE FUEL SYSTEM THAT RESTRICTS FUEL FLOW WILL CAUSE THE MOTOR TO OPERATE AT REDUCED RPMS, ESPECIALLY CLOGGED INJECTORS.
THE PERCENTAGE OF RESTRICTION WILL DETERMINE RPM LOSS, ALL THE WAY UP TO 100% CLOGGED, AND THEN THE MOTOR OBVIOUSLY WILL NOT EVEN START.
ChrisV what is the process for cleaning the fuel tank? I just dropped mine off at the dealership in Columbia for the same thing and he said he wanted to check it out before he made a recommendation but he would probably at least need to drain as much fuel out of the tank as possible.
I told him I didn’t care about loosing the bad gas, I just didn’t want any future problems due to residue left in the tank. He is going to check it out and call me. I’d like to know what you guys do to clean the tank out so I have something to compare to when I talk to the mechanic here.
