Out in harbor and 2014 F200 4-S started loosing RPM. Finally it made a knocking sound. Came in on trolling motor.
Any thoughts on what is wrong???
Who knows these motors, other than dealer?

Charleston Marine is really the go to for outboards as far as I’m concerned. What kind of routine use does it get? Will it crank normally? Is it always making the knocking sound or only at certain times/rpms/hot/cold?

Did the motor run smoothly at idle and start “knocking” when under a load and the knock was inconsistent and low muffled knock…meaning probably spark knock and a fuel pump may be going bad. Or was it a loud constant pinging knock that was consistent and increased with RPMs and decreased all the way down to idle but still pinging loud and clear - check oil level for this scenario first!

This is my son’s boat…I am trying to get more info from him…or get him to sign on here and “talk”/
He says he was running @5500 RPM and the motor started loosing RPM, and finally made metal sound. He turned it off—waited are restarted- still have the sound.
We replaced the fuel pump just before the VST about 2 years ago as the motor would loose RPM and we would have to pump the hand bulb to carry on for a few minutes. I think he said that didn’t help this time…?
From Son:
Was cruising at 5400 RPM then noticed the speed dropping and RPMS dropping down to 5000 then down to 4500
And wouldn’t take throttle past that
Then it started making a ticking/knocking sound min or so later
I thought is was the fuel pump until I heard the knocking sound
Stopped pumped the fuel bulb and didn’t effect anything
So killed the engine and came on trolling motor
Worried I would hurt engine if ran it any further
Was running perfect rest of trip
Motor has clean fresh oil and good oil level …
knocking seems to be at the rate of the RPM
Hopefully it is a fuel injector problem. You changed out fuel pump/vst…
Rust particles can clog the fuel injector screens that are inside the injectors. The fact you replaced both of the major components of the fuel system…leads to my assumption.
If the engine idles without knocking…check compression/plugs for status. That might indicate which cylinders are involved…and why.
Water in fuel causes all sorts of problems…racor clear bowls eliminate most if you monitor them.
Good luck.
Cranked in drive….it sounds like valve?
Unfortunately it doesnt sound good.
if it started knocking under load and began to lose power, its probably not a fuel injector or any type of fuel related issue.
The best you can hope for would be a lower unit failure but thats not likely, but it is a possibility.
remove the oil filter and cut it open and pour the contents through a coffee filter.
if it looks like glitter…
We have seen a few 2.8 liter F200s have a balancer failure like the older 2.7 F150s use to have.
If you dont have a way to cleanly cut the filter, bring it to me and Ill cut it for you. try to keep what ever oil is still in the filter in the filter.
THANK YOU…
The fuel seems OK…
Will have look see on filter…
OIL filter has metal pieces… So, What is that?
Any estimate on repair cost???
if there is metal in the filter, the motor has had a catastrophic failure. doesnt mean it cant be fixed, depending on the damage, but the powerhead will need to be taken apart.
minimum of $4k
OUCH
Problem = Bad crankshaft bearing…!
