Yamaha F225 overheating alarm

I have a yamaha f 225 four stroke that after running for awhile if i put it in neutral and at idle speeds the overheat alarm sounds. However the pee stream is nice and strong so I assume not impellor issue and is fine when i am running at any rpms above idle. Doesnt do all the time only after i have been running the engines for a decent bit. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance

i think i read that could be one of the first signs of a corrosion problem…$$$$. don’t want to scare you, but there is a lot of info about this on THT. or maybe something simple like a bad thermostat?

How many years and hours on your impeller?

An impeller doesn’t have to be chewed up to be bad. One that has “taken set” will not pump water as efficiently. When moving through the water, the water is being forced into the lower unit by the pick-ups, but when you slow down, the impeller is doing all the work.

Also, like Floater said, a t-stat could be the problem.

To Loosewire’s point… We kept getting an over heating alarm a couple offshore trips ago while at idle or at low rmps…anything above 3500 - no alarms and always seem to pee strong.

We pulled the lower unit checked the impeller - looks like a new one but replaced it anyway. The impeller had " taken a set " just like Loosewire explained.

No high temp. alarms after the new impeller.

My advice is change the impeller out whether it looks good or not - pull and check the t-stats in a some hot water on the stove or just replace them. A pyrometer is nice to have also…

Change the impeller…mine ran hot in FLA, grass got around the pick ups…still peeing fine but not enough water flow to the engine to cool it. The pee stream isn’t a good indicator of the water pump condition, it’s more for entertainment purposes.

I had the same problem on my F225 - put in a new water pump and a water pressure gauge - more comforting to look at the gauge than the pee stream.

mine did the same thing. change the impeller AND the T-stats. mine were corroded and stuck open. they are easy to do.

poppit valve also causes this issue
change waterpump, themostats, and poppit valve.
stuff that needs to be done anyway. if the problem continues, its probably a corrosion issue in the baffle plate under the powerhead. depending on the year, yamaha may cover it, even if its out of warranty

Chris is the corrosion issue on the F200,225,250 as bad as I have read.

I am told the Yamaha corrected it do you know what models do not have the corrosion issue

I was also told it has nothing to do with saltwater is that true.

Thanks and sorry to get this one OT

thanks everyone will take a look at replacing the impellor t-stat and pump. As for the corrosian issue how do we tell if that is the case?

its only the 2001-2006 f200-f225 that really have the problem.

if you come by the store one day, I can show you how to check the corrosion, but you have to do it when you have the gearcase off, while changing the waterpump is the best time
