Yamaha nightmare!

So I have made many posts about this motor mostly minor stuff its an 01 25hp yamaha. Long story short I have now replaced the ignition coil, fuel pump, and power pack. Started her up today off the muffs (I know laziness on my part) thinking the kill switch would cut her right back off if she did fire up…wrong it was a cluster f$%^. The power pack worked and she fired right up but the kill switch no longer worked. Ended up pulling the spark plug caps off to kill the motor. It only ran 1 min maybe 2 min max. I know the water pump burned up from the smoke. The kill switch checked out as functional but the motor would not respond. Would changing the power pack somehow change the wiring to were the kill switch wouldn’t work? I am at a loss and can’t afford $100/hr for someone to diagnose it. And the motor would start with the kill switch connected and disconnected.

Also, I took the lower unit off and started the motor up to show my buddy how the kill switch wasn’t working. At first it fired right up. The next couple of times she would not start up…would this be due to the lack of back pressure because the lower unit was not connected?

Fishcrazy;
IMHO sounds like it would cost less to get a pro involved. Gambling, guessing and swaping parts may cause non repairable issues “if not already”:frowning_face:

Yep

At this point i would have to agree ^^^^

I would love to take it in trust me but if I do I will probably have to sell the boat to recover the expense. Going to swap out the water pump today and re-attach the lower unit and see if it will start at least…I will have water running to it this time!

removing the lower unit will have no effect on the engine starting
running the motor with no water long enough to smoke a water pump could easily cause a major overheat issue such as a blown head gasket.
if you did not correctly install the wiring for the new powerpack, the kill switch may not function properly
