Yamaha Oil Change

Can I change the oil on my 150 4stroke as I do my 40hp 4 stroke or do I have to have a pump? If so why?

You will find it MUCH easier to pump it out versus draining it. MUCH less mess for sure. West Marine carries the manual vacume pumps for fairly cheap, definitly worth the investment if you do your own oil changes.

how does the pump work? I just drain the forty into a five gallon bucket using al. foil as a channel.

You pump it up creating a vacum inside the pump container and suck the old oil out thru the dipstick tube.

gotcha, why is it that everyone makes a big deal out of changing the oil? If its as simple as removing the old and the filter whats the fuss? Am I missing something? I have always heard you had to take it in to be done. The motor is new to me and that’s why I’m asking. Don’t wanna screw anything up.

I believe most if not all of the 150’s have a small tube that comes out the back of the motor just below the cowling it should have a oil drain plug it in in which to drain the oil. Definitely need a funnel or tube to catch the oil and direct into a pan.

I know the 250’s DO NOT have this feature and the pump is the only way to go.

West Marine carries several sizes of the manual pumps from $49-$79.

Thanks for the info…and yes the 150 seems to be same as 40. Oil drain below cowling. I just assume if i drain it and replace the oil and filter I’m ok.

you can drain it, but like they said, the pump is money well spent
changing the oil isnt really an issue, but for your annual service there is ALOT of other stuff that needs to be done, like gear oil
greasing prop shaft
greasing all the pivot points
doing a carbon treat on the motor
changing all the fuel filters, etc…

Gotcha Chris, I will bring it in for that. the motor only has ten hours now.

Very very good points there Chris, as allways! Lot of folks don’t seem to realize about all the other items that should be checked, lubed, serviced.
