2005 90 four stroke Yamaha: After the last oil change, started seeing an oil film on the water around the motor, and inspection showed a little oil beneath the oil filter. I removed the filter and all seemed well; no damage to the o-ring gasket, and the engined mounting surface seems fine. No leaks prior to this. I replaced the oil filter and still had oil in that area. Filter is tightened as tight as I can get it. The dip stick is located in this area also, but has a rubber seal around it that doesn’t appear to be leaking by or anything.
The amount of oil leakage is very minor, but it is a nuisance and makes a mess on tilt tube area over time from being tilted up. Oil level has remained full.
This engine has less than 200 hours total on it. I’ve been using NAPA filters, but I also use the same filter on two other engines without problems.
Has anyone else seen this, or have an idea what may be going on? It’s starting to get to me… Thanks
are you sure its actually leaking, or could it be puddling from the last oil change, or could it be leaking somewhere else, and when you trim up or down, it pools there.
Thanks, Chris. It’s hard to tell for certain, but I cleaned all the spillage from the last oil change, and both times I’ve checked, there has been a small amount of oil on the little protrusion from the engine block that is located just underneath the filter, as well as running down toward the drain hole in te cowling. I’ve looked, but can’t find any other sign of leakage. I placed a paper towel over the drain hole in that area once, and it did have a small amount of fresh oil on it after running for 2-3 hours. I’m not sure what else could be leaking; it’s definitely engine oil, and when the motor is tilted up, it gets some on the tilt tube area. I may try a different brand of filter later in the week and see what happens.

I ran the boat today for a couple of hours and the leak is worse, now. I placed paper towels all around the dip stick/filter area, and the leak definitely appears to be from the filter area. I had to add 1/2 qt of oil, too, for the first time. I plan to try and find a yamaha oil filter tomorrow and see if that solves the problem.

OK, I found a yamaha filter, installed, and ran the boat for 30-45 minutes at various speeds and trim angles. No leak so far, so I think the filter fixed it. I won’t be using aftermarket filters again, I think.
