My 150 Yamaha loss power, motor bogged down, and the alarm went off, and I shut it down; oil problem? My main oil tank is full but the small oil reserve is down to the bottom line. The motor still cranks and idles fine.
Also, when I flip the emergency oil switch on the back of the motor should I hear a contactor close, a pump run, or see oil flowing?
Small motor on the bottom of the main oil tank should run when you flip the switch to fill up the small tank on the engine…in a pinch you can fill the small tank by hand which should give you about 45 minutes of run time…
Engine RPM’s won’t go over 2500ish until it’s not keeping itself in guardian mode or whatever you call it.
Yes, when you flip that switch with engine cut off you should feintly hear the pump running, and it fills the tank slowly. If I recall correctly, it takes maybe 2 minutes of running to fill the tank. You will be able to notice the oil level coming up after 30 seconds or so (if you don’t have a clog). If you hear it running but don’t see the level coming up, you probably don’t want to run the pump anymore until you get rid of the clog.
The ignition key has to be in the ON position for the bypass switch to operate the oil pump. I’d test for power on the switch first if you don’t get the pump running. From there, you can figure out where any electrical problem is hopefully instead of needing a new pump.
You could have a clogged filter in the oil line if the oil pump is running when you hit the bypass switch. Float/sensor could be having a problem also, but I’d look for the simple (cheap) fixes first. There are two small in-line oil filters in the HPDI I know- not sure about ox66, etc., but they should be the similar if not the same. On the HPDI, one is in the bottom of the big tank, and one under the cowling. Both are about 5-6 bucks and are about an 7/8 and 1" in diameter. They are whitish in color and plastic.
I changed the oil transfer pump on the main oil tank and that took care of the problem. It took longer to go get the pump than it did to change it, it definitely wasnt brain surgery. Thanks guys!
