Yamaha question

I have a F60TLR ( 2008 ). I recently asked a dealer about valve adjustment for this model and was told he has never seen one out of tolerance. The quote ( $400.00) seemed high and would probably do it my self for that much. The motor idles fine and turns 5900 rpm at WOT but “pops” sometimes when under a heavy load and trying to plane. The spark plugs ( new) look equal and the same color, maybe a little lean if anything. New water separator/fuel filter, new inline filter under the cowling, non e gas and ring free. The motor has approximately 200 hours on it and has the adjustable type valves, not shimmed . I would think a compression test would tell me if the valve has loosened but not tightened. Any thoughts on this ?

Thanks

it would have to be way out for a compression test to find a problem
sounds more like a lean fuel burn to me
you said the plugs looked lean, and if its lean under heavy load, you will get a popping or sneezing

$400 is 4 hours labor, that’s about right to do a valve adjustment, but I also doubt that’s the problem with only 200 hours
not saying the valves couldn’t be out of adjustment, but I wouldn’t start there.

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. As a business owner I know its hard to sometimes give out "free" advice as Ive seen you do many times on this site. I do the same ( electrical questions ) for most people and will do so for anyone else on this forum .
I have checked everything except the screen on the vapor separator which I would doubt being clogged because of the two separate filters it would have to go through. If this were a two stroke I would say its a bad plug or plug wire ( thats the way it acts, though intermittent). Think I will check the valves just to make sure and if not, I will be bringing it to you from Beaufort.
I would hope that people would use your service if they could not figure it out after your advice.

You sir, are a credit to your profession. Thanks !

you are welcome

B- Just realized we are pretty close neighbors by your response to my skiff post. I go to Summerville once a week for my work and would be glad to take your boat to/from Chris V if that is ever a help to you. I swing through Charleston on about a third of my trips so it’s not really out of my way. Thanks again for your helpful comments on the hull choices.
