Yamaha starting issue

The 10 year old Regulator w/1998 SW II 200 I bought this year was a FL boat that sat alot. I’ve been doing the seafoam/gas for the past couple weeks as the motor was having trouble holding idle speed without killing. Yesterday, I went to start it, it took three ignition key turns to get the starter to engage. It ran a bit then died. Then about 12 key turns to get the starter to engage, same thing ran abit then died. Not uncommon with seafoam in the carbs to die, but the inconsistent starting is an issue is a problem. I bypassed the selector switch and ran both fully charged batteries parallel. Connectors are corrosion free and tight. 12.4V @ the starter relay and when it does turn, it screams, but very unreliable. The starter relay isn’t sending juice to the starter everytime I turn the key. Any have experience with this issue with a yammy. My three guesses are ignition, nutural saftey or other safety kill switch, or the starter relay. Anyone know the easiest way to figure this out. Wanted to fish today, but it doesn’t look good. Thanks

what about the ignition itself…is it making contact when it is turned on…did it sit in the weather without the key in it…if so rain could make the contacts in the ignition dull…maybe spray some contact cleaner or wd40 in the ignition slot…

Thanks P1, that got it back to every 2 or 3 turns. Looks like I’m getting a new keyswitch.

Thanks for the call Jimbo. Although I can see how the Yammy cables could easily corrode because they are not sealed very well. This cable is bright, clean and corrosion free. I jumped the power from my truck and it didn’t improve the 2-3 turn issue. I’ll definatley be sealing up the connectors better though.

Thanks Chris. The seafoam is really clearing up the carbs. Ran great.

Once confident that I could get it started, I grabbed the boy and dog and threw her in the lake. Made a decent half day out of it. Jim this is about the size we get all day. Haven’t got one over 4 pounds all year out of norman.

There’s that huntin and fishing machine boy of yers! Nice lookin pup too, looks like he’s got a taste for bait!
