Yamaha Trim button on control shifter

Ok, so last week while shrimping, my trim button on the shifter / throttle doesnt work in the up position, it will trim down. Sounds like relay huh? But…the button on the engine cowling works fine up and down.

I havent gotten out the multi-meter yet but was hoping someone has been there.
I did play with the wiring harness under the console the other day looking for shorted wire to spreader lights.

I guess I will also fix the trim indicator while I am working on this. It worked for a while when I bought the boat, quit working after a couple of months.

If I end up finding bad button on shifter / throttle, has anyone taken it apart? do you have to remove whole shifter assembly to get into the button?

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

You shouldnt have to remove the whole shifter. Take the 2 screws out that hold the plastic handle in place and you can get to it. I was lucky enough to clean the contacts up and stretch the spring in the switch a little and its been fine for a couple of years now. If you have to replace it you will end up taking the handle off to get to the harness which runs all the way to engine. Its a little more work but if your handy its not bad.

I would bet its probably a damaged wire in the shifter

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>I had the exact same scenario on my yammi and yammi shifter. Ended up being a bad ground wire. Just look at all the suggestions people post for you but, don’t forget to check the ground connections. Good luck.

So where was the bad ground at?

</font id=“quote”></blockquote id=“quote”>Main buse ground. The second hint I got was my tach dropped out once or twice. Cleaned and tightened the main buse connections and problem(s) solved. This may have nothing to do with your issue but, it will give you another thing to look at if the first thing (switch) isn’t the problem. Let us know how it goes.
