Yamaha trim/tilt motor assembly question

So my trim/tilt motor assembly on my 90 Yamaha finally died last night. It’s been looking rough for a while and finally gave in. How hard is that to change DIY? And is there anything wrong with going with aftermarket parts instead of Yamaha parts? And if not where is the best place to get the aftermarket parts? I can find the Yamaha parts online for all around the same price but the aftermarket part prices are all over the place. Anybody have any suggestions?

It is a fairly easy DIY. I recently did mine and went after market. Hanckell was the cheapest I could find. The aftermarket motor casing is metal so it is important to clean it rinsed and coated with something like T9.

Do you remember how much the aftermarket price was? Ballpark? I’m checking around now but I’m just curious what to expect. Was it a yamaha that you changed out? Anything unusual that you ran into changing it? Like you said it looks simple but I want to make sure it’s something I can handle before I jump on it.

Mine was a Yahama 50 four stroke. I believe it was around $240 with the Yahama being $400+. If your motor is a 2 stroke I believe you can find them online for around $150. The only issue I ran into was I had to borrow some C clip pliers to disconnect the unit from the motor so I could access the screws to take the tilt motor off. Other than that it was a simple 30 min job.

The reason I say about the 2 vs 4 stroke is I called a guy and ordered a $120 motor that did not specifiy, but was assured by the sales rep it fit both, it didn’t. Be sure the motor is for a 4 stroke.

I think I found the right one based on the part number when I looked it up and confirmed it at a couple places. This motor is a two stroke.
