Yami HPDI or Optimax

I’m considering a re-power on an older CC.
Don’t really want to spend the money on a new four-stroke on a boat that is 15 years old. My main objective is to get more range out of the 85 gallons of fuel it carries. Noise reduction is a secondary goal.
I have been looking at Mercury Optimax mostly, but recently found a really good looking 200 hp HPDI. The only head-head comparisons that I have been able to find was done on Bass boats and the Optimax came out ahead on fuel consumption. I guess my question is “Will the HPDI deliver fuel mileage in close comparison to a equal sized Optimax when used on a deep V CC? And what is the noise levels produced as compared to the Optimax?” I would really hope to achieve around 3-3.5 mpg at cruise with a 150-225 hp on a 21’ deep V CC.

opti, parts are cheaper

one of the few times I disagree with spareparts
“some” of the parts may be cheaper, but chances are you are going to need more of those parts on the optimax
fuel burn is going to be VERY similar
performance is going to be very similar
if you need more than 200hp, do NOT buy an HPDI
the 250-300 HPDI was not a very reliable engine
also, do not buy a pre 2004 optimax, major issue with injector failures
sound levels, the opti may be a bit louder, but its a really cool sound, so…

both are good motors
there are more good Yamaha techs in Charleston than there are mercury techs
parts are more readily available for the Yamaha
I have owned both, and if the deal was right, I wouldn’t turn away from either

I would think that should be no problem, I get 3.6 mpg (with a normal load out on decently smooth water) with a straight up carbureted Yamaha 150 on a 20’ CC. Granted, more power = more gas, but the direct injection motors are significantly more efficient too.

Can’t really help w/ the HPDI vs Optimax question. I know people that swear by both, I would probably go Yamaha but that’s just because I am more familiar w/them.

Thanks all, that’s what I was looking for. Didn’t want to start the Ford/Chevy Yamaha/Mercury agurment. Where I live I have more Mercury techs than Yamaha. Today on the way home from work I passed 6 boats on the road, 5 Optis and One Yami, no Jrudes at all so Opti has my nod right now. I really didn’t realize HPDI numbers mirrored Optimax so close in fuel economy until just last week…go figure.

Wolfie, 3.6 with carbs? Really??
I’m running a 2003 carb 150 Merc and do good to get 2 in reality.
On the lakes around here I can get around 2.3 but when she hits the open ocean and the tabs start lowering the fuel delivery starts going up. I don’t ever bank on but around 2mpg.

really. at least according to my HDS+EP-60R fuel flow meter, and checks w/ reality the few times I fill 'er up and calculate manually from my GPS miles. granted, I don’t get that high if I have a bunch of people and gear onboard, or if I really open it up, or seas pick up, etc but I would definitely say 3+ is pretty dependable. I think the boat weighs in around 2200 dry + motor? So fully rigged, fueled, and loaded I would guess its pushing 3000 lbs. I normally cruise around 25-30 mph on smooth water, top end is around 45 mph but I usually don’t need to go that fast.

At first I really wanted a four stroke, but I have no complaints about the two stroke. I did the math, and I can buy a LOT of gas for the difference in price (and maintenance costs) of a two vs four for a little gain in mpg. The direct injection systems add some complexity, but you still can’t beat two strokes for power/weight and reliability. On a new boat, I would probably still try to get a four stroke just because they don’t have the awesome two stroke sound/smell that the wife and kids don’t love as much as I do, but two strokes are definitely still good options.

Had 7 Optimaxes. Had problems with first two (01’s) until fixed by Merc. After that, all 7 perfect. Power and fuel economy excellent. Have to Yammis now. Also good motors. Definitely agreee that there are more Yammi mechanics around Chas. Still love the Optis, though.
