Has anybody ever gone up to nc for the spring yellowfin bite? Good? Bad? Worth the gas to haul the boat up there?

I remember someone took a Freeman up there, by water, a year or so back. They had good luck.

Yes they are catching yellowfin right now on the warmer side of the break off hatteras
We went in May last year. Missed the really good bite by a week but did ok. Put a 90 pounder and a 60 pounder in the boat. We fished out of OI in my friends sporty.
I’ve never seen so many boats in the same area. Talk about a parking lot!
They had better action the week after I left, but it was an experience for sure.
DoubleN went in October I think and flat wore them out

Whats the furthest south you start seeing good numbers of YFT? We would be interested in a trip. Not to change the topic but we are also looking at doing a trip to the other side of the stream out of Charleston this spring if others want to buddy boat.

They do good out of Hatteras too but OI really the best. South of there I think is hit or miss

I have been up there several times between Feb. 1st and March 15th. Most of the trips were on 60ft charter boats up there. We were always targeting bluefin, but caught a couple yellowfin along the way. The primary concern is the marine weather up there. I have been out in 10-12 ft seas commonly there. Much of the time the seas will be virtually flat on the warm side and 10-12 inside. I have been out in 18-24 ft seas there. I have been out on a flat day where a rogue 24 footer nearly capsized the 60 footer we were on. More times than not, I have sat on shore, wanting to be out. Getting out past the sandbar at Oregon Inlet or Hatteras is probably the biggest challenge. There is one absolute must: Follow the charter boats out through the channel at 5:30am and back in between 3:30 and 4:30pm. It would be best to keep in touch with other boats on the radio.
I now have a boat that in theory would be fine up there, but I have great respect for the sea conditions. Dealing with the captains and mates at OBX became such a challenge that I finally just gave up. Tuna Duck out of Hatteras is totally legit, but Dan is commonly booked up by the elites. Sea Breeze and ASaltWeapon, are also good, but I’ve had negative experiences with both. I went up there to jig and pop: this is what led to much of the trouble. Only so many have a clue, and they’re going to be booked up.
I read an article about Dan Rooks and Tuna Duck one time about how he goes about it. Your time would be well spent lookin for this article as it is fairly detailed about his discovering a tuna tactic for Hatteras. This especially because Hatteras is closest. Many of the most prominent jig and poppers go with Tuna Duck

Look at A-saltweapon in mid April 2018. He is out of Oregon Inlet.
