Yellowfin tuna from the Gulf

A bit of a late report but here are some pictures from my trip to Venice, LA. for some yellowfin fishing on the rigs. It was a great time with some new friends and even though the fishing fell short of expectations we still came home with plenty of meat each. High point was a tuna on top water in the pouring rain, low point was a terrible mate that walked off with the two best pieces of top loin on the first day… He wasn’t on the boat on day two. We saw the new LA state record Snowy Grouper hanging up at the landing (60lbs). We hit the rig it was caught on the next day but we didn’t have glow sticks and snagged a conger eel in 650’.
All in all it was a good time one the water and everyone did great. Thanks Jason for the invite.

You can see one jumping out of the water in the distance here.

so you went on a charter and the mate took some fillets from you? I could understand sharing fillets, but stealing from your customer is really bad form.

Also, what are your plans for the conger eel? I’ve never had eel, save for the sushi stuff, which I think is american eel.

Yeah we all were dumbfounded. We walked away from the dock without tipping that day and later the captain said he totally understood.
As for the eel, there were plenty of beggars at the dock that were fighting over yellowfin heads and so a full eel was a prize to them. We tried to let it go but after a 650’ accent it had had it. Although, as soon as it hit the deck it went S#$t crazy and chased the mate around the deck. The captain was terrified of it and said it was as dangerous as a cobra. A quick google search lead me to see why. They are mean and will take a chunk out of you.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

The eels actually have two sets of jaws. The outer one holds the prey and the inner one reaches forward and rips out chunks to swallow. Straight out the the aliens movie.
