Family trip out west. Been planning it for 2 years.
With wife and son.
Not a fishing trip per se, but we did get to do a little bit.
Unbelievable hiking, wildlife, scenery …obviously.
Regarding the fishing …
070914 - Northeast section of YNP - a small cutthroat stream off the Yellowstone River. We got off to a rough start because my wife did not enjoy the bushwhacking off the main trail to the stream. Also, before we wet the first fly of the trip, I stepped on my fly rod while tying on a fly for my 16 year-old and it snapped cleanly in half, leaving my son and I to share the other one. Despite some bickering between us over usage of the rod and my backcountry bug eaten wife, we managed to pull a few tiny cutthroats out of the little stream, and the skunk was off the trip. She decided not to come with us on the fishing excursions after that, but was a good sport about letting us go.
That afternoon, we gave the raging Yellowstone a shot from the bank and it was a lot of fun. Fortunately I sent 3 rods out there. Salmonflies crawling all over us, we pulled out around a dozen nice Cutts, a few Cuttbows (Rainthroats?) and a Rainbow. I saw an eagle cruising by 20 feet off the water with a huge trout in its talons. Pretty cool.
071014 - Back to the same spot on the Yellowstone, same time. Same action as the previous day. I lost the biggest Cutt at the net all trip here. The one that got away. I won’t speculate but it had to be over 20 inches.
Down to Grand Teton NP.
071314 - A tributary of the Snake River - caught 4 or 5 nice Cutts in what was in my opinion the prettiest setting all trip.
071315 - Went back to the same place and the action was slightly better this time. This is where my son lost his huge fish. I saw it all happen. Snapped the leader. It was a nice
