yellowtail snapper

A friend of mine sent me some photos of his catch from last Sunday fishing trip. In it there were was a yellowtail snappper. I did not know we had them around here. My friend said they got them in about 150’. Was this just a fluke or are there enough of them around to target them?

I haven’t seen anyone catch more than 1-2 of them and we have only caught a couple.

I caught two this past July in Hilton head on a sabiki rig. It surprised me. Plus in was inshore in about 15’ of water. They were small 10"

I had a school swimming around the boat in 90’ one day. There was about a 60 lb cuda sitting under the boat so they were hesitant to bite anything.

We have the Flags, but our problem is getting beyond the AJ’s to catch them. If you find the Rainbow Runners, you’ll often have the YT’s mixed in. This time of year they’re in and around the deeper wrecks. If you find a wreck 100-200 FSW, you’ll find a few YT’s, but the AJ’s will likely be there too. Best way to pick through them is to jump in and stick one with a speargun!

Those things are spooky, very hard to spear. Most of the ones I have seen were on the ledge and not in big schools
