Very few of us have found any YFT off Charleston in good numbers lately.
Ya’ll have read about the YFT bite in the Gulf.
There are a good number of boats and skippers there with the knowledge to put ya onto them.
We towed the boat down from Mt Pleasant and stayed at Venice Marina.
With some local help (1 Eyed Eddie) we got into a few using chum then later raised them on live bait.
Mr Freeman has several of his products operating out of there and we got out on hull #5, Mike Gray’s. Very fast, great fishability, thirsty Yamaha 350’s and did I mention fast?
It’s a 30 mile run down the river, the depth drops off immediately. Just pick a rig and deploy: using pogies for chumming or hardtails for live baiting we got into YFT. We even got a few tossing plugs. We fished for YFT several days and cooled down a dozen (35-110#). One day we spent dropping on the nearshore rigs for cobia & red snapper (they opened it for us Fri/Sat/Sun). In our YF we didn’t once burn more than 100 gallons in a day.
Back at the marina each day we saw boats unloading: YFT, bft, wahoo, amberjack, red snapper (real nice ones too), grouper varieties and lots of inshore targets of opportunity.
We did it without a depthfinder too. When they say an upgrade is simple; beware!
