A buddy and I were discussing the question below for a while today! I’d love to hear ya’lls answers.

Background:
You have 500$ to spend on inshore gear to build your set up from scratch.
You already have fishing line, hooks, weights.
You’ll be fishing mostly inshore, furthest out would be the Jetties.

What do you buy?

Couple nice rod and reels, and a good cast net!!

Definitely Battle 2 combos. Quality combos for cheap(er) prices. Would also buy some artificials and a cast net for bait.

I gotta agree with Fritz on this,two 400 Battle 2s on 7’ medium rods and two 6000s on 7’ heavy rods. those reels have carbon fiber drags and are hard to beat for the price. If you sweet talk the local guys at Haddrells that is real close to that budget.

Daiwa BG hands down the best reel on the market for the money. My personal preference is Shimano Stratic 3000, however you are paying twice as much for the Shimano.

Rods now that is a personal preference and it also depends on if you are fishing live bait/cut bait or throwing artificial baits. IMHO Ugly Stick for live/cut bait. Artificial - Star Aerial or Seagis, Falcon coastal pr St Croix Tidemaster. All of these are under $150. My favorite is the Seagis b/c it is light, well balanced and comes with a true life time warranty.
