your spot?

In the ocean? What is your spot? I mean if you catch fish at a certain spot and you go to it and someone else is there did they steal it from you,did they see something on the sonar that made you stop and fish it??. Were they there another day and see you catch fish? Just wondering what it takes to make it yours???

Lot’s of people have been fishing these waters for a long time. No such thing as a secret spot anymore. It’s everyone’s ocean and everybody’s fish.

It’s just a little annoying when I’m offshore doing some bottom fishing, on a place that I found on my own, and someone decides to run 20yds past me for the sole purpose of pushing the ‘mark’ button on their GPS.

I understand that!!! But how can you say they did that when they might have been coming to your spot to fish their spot?

Man, I hate to break this to you, but people been fishing these waters for a long time before you came along, and there ain’t many secret spots anymore  Just secret to you. No spot is yours. It’s all ours. Even a spot that you find all by yourself and think you are the only person to ever fish it has already been found and fished a dozen times over, by everything from long liners to blackfish trappers to head boats and charter boats and trawlers. Those numbers are all passed around, sold, traded, given away, and yeah, sometimes stole :smiley:Then sold, traded or given away again. There are a heck of a lot of boats out there with some really good bottom finding equipment, and has been for the last 50 years. You aint the first one to be paying attention to the bottom.

Got to love new technology. Now we can just put the radar cursor on your boat from 5 miles away and hit the mark button, and never even disturb you:sunglasses:

I recently went on a grouper fishing trip out to the middle grounds in the GOM. Leaving out of Hudson Beach, FL it’s about a 100 mile run out there. We were heading to what we thought was our secret sinkhole/ spring that we had found and fished a few times by ourselves. It is a very small sinkhole, only a couple of boat lengths across and stacked up with fish. We were planning to anchor up on it and fish all night.

When we got there just before dark, there was another boat sitting directly on “our” secret hole. We pulled up and had a discussion with them, and they being reasonable folks who knew we didn’t come 100 miles just to steal their numbers, agreed that we could fish right beside them. So we doubled up the chum, and the beer, and the sandwiches and we both caught a load of fish. Just after daylight 3 more boats showed up at the same spot, and we left  The ocean is big, but productive bottom is fairly limited and well known.

I’d actually prefer that.

Because they don’t stop or have changed course solely to pass by. Usually where a good set of #s are, there are other good spots nearby and they drive right over them.

I don’t care if someone fishes on a spot I like to go to. I just wish they didn’t cheat to find it. Catching fish sure is fun, but the feeling you get when you spot something on the sonar and find out that there really nice fish down there is awesome. You never forget those days.

Anyhow, the next guy is equally entitled to fish exactly where I fished when I’m not there. Heck if someone showed up and calls me on the radio, I’d tell him to come on over.

Also, I’d bet that most people don’t give their #'s away because they are afraid that they will come back to a spot that is fished out. A lot of people don’t understand the concept of leaving fish.

Secret spot what is that??? With todays maps and electronics nothing is secret. The problem is some people don’t know how to read a map to find structure. It is easier to see a boat on their way out and hit waypoint on the GPS. No big deal to me unless they try to anchor up within casting distance.

A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.

anyone can drive to a set of #'s, but what you do when you get there is the rest of the story…

“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”

I agree with that Sells, but after pretty much teaching myself to bottom fish in the last 10 years, the spot is 75% of the deal, the rest is bait, current, moon phase, methods, etc.

Good answers all around I was watching wicked tuna last night and one captain had a boat on “his numbers” which prompted my question. I don’t get on the ocean near enough but I used to fish alot of bass tournaments and always heard "someone was in my spot " so just thought I would get yalls opinion on it

No secret spots in the ocean?!?!? Ha ha ha!!! Good one!
