Your weekend smackdown report 5/2 5/3 5/4

Looking at the weather early last week decided I had better take full advantage of it. Went ahead and took the vacation day for Monday.

Saturday the wind didn’t quit as early as I wanted it to so I unloaded the Cobia gear out of the Pioneer and resigned myself to inshore fishing. A little after noon I found myself outside the lighthouse with a net full of Menhaden. The ocean to my surprise looked pretty good and I couldn’t resist the urge. Ran out to 50-60 feet and started messing around with the sea bass and AJ’s in hopes a Cobia would come up with them. Water was a little colder than I wanted and never say a Cobia. Ran back home at 5 to wash the boat up and make the drive to Edisto

Woke up Sunday morning in Edisto to fish the Dolphin Slam aboard Keepin it Reel. Ran south towards the Deli, short of the Deli we dropped lines. Typical dolphin fishing day. Picked up 11 Dolphin and 1 sail. Nice size with one slinger and a few of the larger picked up on spinning gear made for a nice day! Mandy ended up taking lady angler with a 28lb dolphin to top the day off. Weather was beautiful all day. Cleaned up and back to Charleston

Another 3am rise to fish monday aboard the Low Pass. Headed out of the Jetties towards the Hole. Made the hole a little later than expected and was worried we would miss part if that morning tuna bite. Fish hooked up almost immediately on the long tuna line. Close to the boat realized it was a respectable Wahoo. Then the worst happened… Fish goes under the boat into the prop. Boat in neutral Capt Jimmy’s yelling for the mask and says he’s going in after it. Strap on the mask breaks as soon as he puts it on, so gaff in one hand and other hand holding the mask over he goes with the wahoo 20 ft down amazingly still hooked up. Down he goes and surfaces right behind the boat gaff in hand pulling against the fish. I grab the gaff from him and start to pick it up over the rail. Halfway up the worst happens the gaff pulls through the little bit of meat that it was stuc

Next thing I know I look over and there’s Jimmy with the wahoo by the tail(really, no joking). I reach over and sink the gaff in good this time and in the box he goes.

Sink the gaff in who? Jimmy or the wahoo?

It was definitely the wahoo… I’ve missed a gaff or two or three before. He should have been much more nervous!
