Ralph and I were fishing the Cooper today. Main channel we are on plane looking ahead. A redfish about 40 inches breached 2 ft out of the water. No, it wasn’t a sturgeon, garfish, dolphin etc. We both got a very clear look at it. Anyone ever heard of or seen such a thing? I have never and probably would call BS too.
Have seen bull reds jump at the Gtown jetties.
Came up out of 30’ water, all around the boat while we were anchored.
All of them were “bug eyed” and looked like they were scared to death…
Never received a good answer as to why they were doing this, except that something bigger was underneath them and the Reds were on their menu…
Interesting. All of the above theories are plausible and consistent. We were in the deep channel, 40-50 ft. Dolphin are common here also. In mostly fresh water, BTW. You never know what you will see on the waters! (and thanks Cracker, that means a lot coming from you)
I have heard of it, but never seen it myself. Was talking to a guide in NE FL that fishes some of those more brackish waters, and he says over his whole life he has had maybe 3 of them jump. I think they were hooked when they jumped for him, though.
I’ve seen them do it when they were being chased by dolphin.
And I wouldn’t call BS on anything you claim. You seem pretty dang solid to me.

I agree, Optiker has earned the right not to be called BS on.
While not a fish, we did see something unusual on Saturday: a deer swimming across the Wando north of the 41 bridge. This is the second time I’ve seen this happen.

I’ve seen deer swimming across rivers many times. Is dog hunting season open there? Dogs will often push a deer across a big river.
A few years ago my wife and I were taking a sailboat up to Charleston. I don’t even remember exactly where we were, somewhere between Hilton Head and Charleston in the ICW. 2 deer ran down the bank and jumped in the river just ahead of us, with a large pack of dogs hard on their azz. Most of the dogs hit the river too and caught the deer. There were 3 dogs on one little doe, drowning her, and I couldn’t watch that. So I ran the boat up to them and beat off the dogs with a boat hook, then put the boat between the deer and the dogs and kept it there until the deer made it to shore. She looked fine when she left.
When hunting season opens here, there are a lot of hounds turned out and many deer bail out and swim across the Savannah River into SC. And a lot of people are out in boats waiting on one. No it’s not legal to kill it in the water, but these country boys don’t worry too much about that River standers, they are listening for the hounds and move the boat where the dogs are running, and try to shoot the deer while it still on the bank
Deer are very strong swimmers and I’ve seen them 3 miles offshore.

Apparently it's not uncommon to find antlers in tiger shark stomachs.
Ralph said he had seen it one other time in 50 years of fishing.
I’ve seen several deer swimming across river, most all being chased by dogs. Never seen the dogs swim after, but thats crazy that people would hunt them from boats…wow thats sporting…
On a tangent, one of my favorite books is called “Rumbling of the Chariot Wheels” and its a first person account of growing up on Edisto in the Civil war era by a boy who grew up on Peter’s Point plantation. The end of the book has an account of a journey to Hunting Island, being rowed across St Helena by slaves. On one of their deer drives a deer ran into the surf. As they watched, it was attacked and killed likely by a big Tiger. Great book highly recommended.

Some of my neighbors ain’t out there for the sport, they are out for the deer meat. It’s a very efficient way of getting it
I don’t even like deer meat myself, nor does my wife. I don’t shoot a deer unless it’s in our garden, then I give it to a neighbor who is hungrier than we are. I just let one walk across the front yard, and called the Chinese restaurant for a take out
