anyone used/owned one? saw one at the wally world for $50 which is roughly half the price of food saver. would be nice to save the money but if it sucks id rather pony up the extra cash

I use regular old generic Walmart freezer bags. I fill up my sink with water. I zip the bag almost all the way shut except for one corner. I dunk the bag into the water with the open corner above the water. All the air is forced out by the pressure of the water. Done.

yup thats how i do it now as well and it works fine… just takes up a ton of room in my freezer, that’s why im looking at a vacumn sealer. would also be nice for steaks, veggies, and other stuff i might want to freeze

Are you talking about the handheld thing with the special bags? We tried it a few years ago and it worked halfway decent but not all that great. I then moved up to the next one ($70~) that uses vacuum sealer bags but it was slow to pump out the air and worn out after a year. I bought a Foodsaver two years ago for about $150 and it is well worth it. I can probably freeze stuff twice as fast as with the $70 one and much less of a pain to use.
I think its new. It looks just like a food saver but half the price. I think im ggonna go for it

I might be mistaken, but I interpret your comment about taking up too much space to mean you fill the bag with water with the meat inside of it – basically freezing meat in a huge block of ice. I know many people who do this, but I’ve never been a big fan of the results.
I think what HoofArded meant was to use the water in your sink to squeeze all of the air out of the bag, resulting in a perfectly airless ziplock. It’s a little hard to describe, but this video demonstrates it pretty well (although I’d probably spring for some nicer bags): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWbMzO3jdgQ
I think this method works perfectly fine, although I’d probably go ahead and buy a real vacuum sealer (I love mine). That said, you can actually use this method to do things a vacuum sealer can’t do. Almost all home vacuum sealers can’t handle liquids, but you can use the sink method (also called the archimedes principle) to get a really nice seal on soups, stocks, etc…
you’re right… i was mistaken. that’s pretty cool right there. still think im gonna get the vacumn sealer though… the convenience is calling my name

once you have a vacuum sealer, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one!

I have never had good luck buying “cheap” vacuum sealers. My oppinion, buy a good one to start with…

So I have been thru some cheap ones, thru a couple of the top of the line food saver ones… If you use them alot they all will die in a year or two. I broke down and brought Cabelas top of the line. I have to say I use it alot from deer, hogs, sausage, fish, crabs to buying meat in bulk cutting it up to meal portions and sealing. Never had a problem with it I can buy the bag in bulk for 15 dollars for a 50’x11" roll. Good investment for one or a couple guys. It beats the vacum and seal of a food saver by a long shot, better seal and the food last longer. Going on five years on this one. Good luck
