05/16

So my sunburn healed enough and the weather cleared up enough for me to go fishing. Went from 730am-1pm. Caught the usual whiting and stringrays. Hooked into a big shark on a whole whiting. The fight was on as soon as he felt the drag he took off and jumped and jumped and jumped. Wouldnt stop the whole time i was fighting him untill i had it up near the shore. I could see the beginning of my leader line and saw the shark. I knew there was a steel rod sticking up out there so i was trying to avoid it. But just as i was about to set my rod in the holder and go down and grab its tail it took off again straight into the steel rod and sliced my 300 pound mono like butter. It would have been the biggest shark ive caught and it was prob 3 times bigger in girth than my last one and prob around 9 to 10ftlong. Was pretty upset about it and still replaying in my head what i coulda done differently lol. Hopefully i didnt just miss my only chance on a big one.

Stevo, good work on the shark, but considering it was jumping a lot during the fight, it would likely be a spinner or blacktip. A 9-10ft spinner or blacktip would be a world record and it is much more likely the fish was in 6ft range. either way they are great fighters and acrobatic so great work. adrenaline plays tricks on the mind.

Ive seen and measured a spinner just a few inches shy of 8ft and a black tip a few shy of 7ft both were possible records. Those are the most likely culprits and 8ft is a giant for either but not impossible. Ive also seen a great white inshore in june or july before. I hooked a 8ft plus shark in the stono like 5 years ago that jumped about 10ft out the water. It jumped in front of a boat so i had a good size comparison. It ripped off 300yds while pulling a 13ft boat. A lot of records get caught and never make it to the record books. I caught a record size sharpnose and know people who have caught record size bonnets, sand tigers and lemons.

I was just going off my last one. It dwarfed it in size. The last one jumped but didnt make big splashes like this one and didnt pull nearly ad hard.
