Went out for a few hours today right before high tide. The wind had not picked up yet and no work today with the MLK Holiday. Water temp right at 50.1 degrees. Clarity at least 4-5 feet.
Went right to a spot I have caught reds at during high tide. Submerged trees in a creek. I’ve been fishing mud minnows on a jig head with some good success. I just slow bounce them along the bottom. This particular tree at HT puts me on the bottom around 15 feet. First cast I got my first sheepshead. Never caught one before. Thought it was a flounder at first because it was so wide. Finally got it into the boat without a net or fish “gripper”. I had not even had all of my tools out yet and I had a fish. Finally got him to the boat and grabbed him by the tail.
This one measured 20" in length. Glad I did not grab him by the mouth as he had a full set of teeth! I decided to put him back as I had not cleaned one before and figure I’d start another day. That was the only bite in that area. I did loose about 5 jig heads staying so close to the trees.
Went to another creek and drifted out with the tide. Again minnows on a jig head. Worked it very slowly at the grass line back towards the boat. Got two trout that way. I think both hits where when the minnow was just sitting on the bottom. So yea, very slow. Both fish were in 8-10 feet of water, within 5 feet of the grass line.
At this point the wind was picking up a good bit, the tide is pushing me out and I had to keep an eye out for oyster reefs in this creek so I was busy. Went back to my first spot but the tide was moving so fast I had to put my trolling motor on 6 just to stay in one spot and that gets pretty noisy.
Decided I had enough for the day and came home. I hope you guys had a good day if you made it on the water today.
P.S. - What tastes better? Trout or Sheepshead?
